 And I thought Pau was overpaid at 19. Mchale better be a magician with him because you won't be able to trade him in year 3.

Does the salary count as the average across each year of the contract or is the cost against the cap 5 mil in years one and two?

I have an idea - let's all overreact before hearing all the details.

I can get behind that Deal. Year we overpayed, but every half decent center that signed in the last couple of years is overpayed. With Asik we can concentrate on what's most important: develope our young guys and get a high draft pick next yeAr. Asik needs to work to at least contribute a little on Offense and be a beast on defense.

Now we should trade away Scola and Martin and maybe our lesser promising young talent and get ready for the future.

    Gilbert Arenas Clause.

Basically, he'll get 5m this year, 5.25 next year, and then it will balloon up.

If the deal is 3 years/25.1, year 3 would be for 14.85m.

    If it's 4 years/25.1, years 3 and 4 would be 14.85 combined.

In terms of cap implications, Asik's average salary would count against the cap for each year.

Low starting salary keeps cap flexibility too.

Edit- never mind, it is spread out to roughly 8.36 over 3 years.

Offseason started out with hopes of a bold move for Howard, ends up with typical Morey gathering of mediocre assets.

I'm not excited about it. I just don't think they'll match. And if we haven't dumped this contract by the third year, I think we're going to regret we ever made it.

Forst two years is 5 million, then 5.something million. It's because of the Gilbert Arenas provision that it's structed this way.

Under regular circumstances, it would be a contract starting at 7 million, I think.

i like that aspect. Understanding Chicago's cap and knowing that structuring it in this way will seriously hinder their ability to match.

(At least I assume it's that, because I don't know Chicago's cap...the alternative is that Morey wants to balance Houston's cap structure...but with so many unknowns 3 years from now as almost everyone will be off the books, I feel like he can't possible know how to do that yet so that's not as likely)

Interesting, this is all about scaring off the Bulls from matching. Really smart, actually.

A 3 year deal at $25.1 mil under the Arenas Provision would pay Asik roughly $5 mil, $5.2 mil, and $14.9 mil in each of the next 3 years.

For the Rockets, the Arenas Provision means that for the purpose of calculating the Rockets team salary, the contract counts as roughly $8.36 mil, $8.36 mil and $8.36 mil in each of the next 3 years (despite the payments being back-loaded, the cap hit is not). However, if the Bulls were to match, the contract would count as $5 mil, $5.2 mil and $14.9 mil.

That 3rd year salary would make it really difficult on the Bulls to match, given that they'll still be paying big money to Rose, Noah and Boozer and probably will need to also pay big $ to bring back Gibson.

Also, if the Bulls were to match, they cannot trade Omer Asik for an entire year without his consent (and cannot trade him to Houston at all for an entire year). This contract would also be even more difficult to trade the 2nd year, given that it would essentially be a 2 year, $20 mil contract with a big baloon payment for the last in the 2nd year. (Not sure if there are any other complications that makes the contract rather onerous on the Bulls).

Overrated by who??? Just Morey? I'm pretty sure no other GM in the league is dumb enough to pay him $26MM over 3 years.

I can guarantee without looking that this is by far the richest contract in the history of basketball for a multi-year veteran who averages under 13 minutes/game throughout his career.

    Morey has lost his mind.

I think Morey structured the contract that way so the Bulls think twice about matching.

I like Asik. Taking together age, size, defensive skill/aptitude, I can see why he was so attractive to the Rockets. 8 million per year sounds like a lot, but considering that the Rockets rarely overpay for players I expect he'll be a significant contributor for us.
