Face it folks, the Texans don't have any money to go chasing big names. We really need to sign Mallet, Jackson, Newton and Reed with the $10 million we have. Unless you are planning on cutting Joseph, Johnson and Myers. Then of course, you need to replace them with someone cheaper and as good. A look at potential salary-cap savings as Texans work on rearranging numbers February, 25, 2015 http://espn.go.com/blog/houston-texans When asked about Andre Johnson's high salary-cap figure last week, Texans general manager Rick Smith said Johnson's contract was one of many the team would look at. Johnson counts for $16.1 million against this coming year's salary cap. That's the second-highest number on the team, after defensive end J.J. Watt. Though the Texans don't have to make any moves to get under the salary cap, they do plan to shuffle things this week while they work through their free-agency plans. The Texans were pushed right up against the cap last season, but the jump this year will be beneficial. The cap is expected to rise at least $10 million from around $133 million. The projection the NFLPA offered agents last week was $143 million, though I've heard numbers as high as $145 million. The Texans have $135,359,399 committed to the 2015 cap, which will give them some wiggle room. Still, they always consider contracts based on how much they'd be willing to devote to a player given his production and age. Let's take a look at the players who count the most against the Texans' salary cap for next season and what potential cap savings could come from cutting them, according to OverTheCap.com. Remember two things. First, there are some players on this list who aren't candidates for a restructure or release for cap savings. For the integrity of the numbers, we've simply included the top 10 contracts in terms of cap savings, all other factors notwithstanding, just to give an idea of the complete picture. Second, releasing a player isn't the only option when making cap considerations. Restructures can also help and that's a move the Texans have used plenty. Houston Texans' Salary-cap Situation Pos. Well the Ravens would save 8.5 million by cutting him so if they can't get a new deal worked out to cut down that cap it's a good bet they cut him. That said, I have a hard time believing that the Texans would have the cap space to sign him to a deal he'd like and that he'd pick the Texans over other spots.
Hope? Let me tell you something, my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. It's got no use in the Houston Texans subforum. You'd better get used to that idea
james casey cut by philly, still lives in Houston, seems like he might follow kubiak in denver, but would love to have the swiss army knife back
first off...why no Cush on this list? Red: Cuts Cutting Fitz and Graham would free up another $5.7MM. Fitz: If they are sold on Mallet, what's the value in bringing back Fitz coming off a leg injury? Keenum has proven a competent back-up and Savage remains a project. Graham: Doesn't seem to be a match for OB's system. Might even look into a trade here, GB, Denver and Philly are three teams which off the top of my head which might show some interest. Blue: Restructure or Cut Can't say anything that hasn't already been beat to death with AJ and JJ. Regardless of Jackson's pending FA, you have to make a move with JJ. Both are highly regarded in the locker room, and are still productive. Hopefully the familiarity makes them more amiable to re-stucture. Green: Are we ready? that $6MM is enticing, and Myers still probably has enough demand on the market that he could garner one final payday...so re-structure wouldn't be in his best interest. The FO would have to be very comfortable with XSF at guard and moving Jones to C...or have a comfort level with the available depth via draft.
Fairly certain this is wrong; Watt's dead money this year is $27,969, not $17,969. Not that it matters as he's not going anywhere but...
Myers did not earn his paycheck last year. Release him or trade him to Denver for pick(s). I don't know if Jones is the answer at C but the Texans may be able to live him at C for a year. I would not be surprise to see a C drafted this year.
Harry Douglas anyone? Got released by the Falcons. I've always liked him, he's been stashed away behind two probowl caliber receivers.
I am on board with this, as well. OL depth just becomes an even bigger hole to fill through draft and FA.
Can they take a chance at CB? Center? Both? They can cut JJo and draft a CB in the 1st round as well as resigning KJax. If they can't resign Newton and also cut Myers, that's too much change-up in the OL, especially for a team that will be depending a lot on that unit. They might wait till the draft to see who is available for them to pick. If you draft Waynes, you can cut Joseph but still need to sign Jackson.
