I understand why the Astros have been so patient with Josh Fields. His K to BB ratio, and FIP jump off the page. You let him go, and he puts it together to become the next it boy of the former Astros tracking thread. Having said that, at this point you just have to cut bait. We've given it our best shot to be patient, but it's painfully obvious he should be the odd man out right now. Particularly with Feliz claiming the role of the high upside project.
He could put it together... then again, he is 30 and has never been able to have any sort of prolonged stint as a set-up/closer type guy. At this point, he's less accomplished than even Chad Qualls was at his age. He certainly has some talent/life in that arm... but the Astros have better options and have given him more than enough opportunity.
I know. Just pontificating that it would be better if they could. I should have worded it differently. It's not even about losing the fans. It's the complete inability to realize and adjust what is clearly not working. Swinging himself into the dirt with his helmet falling off on nearly every attempt. And when he does try to take something off the swing, he goes completely to the other extreme and makes such weak contact that it's amazing the ball leaves the batter's box.
Gotta say, that's unfair to Qualls. While your statement is accurate, Qualls was a more accomplished pitcher when he entered the league (and esp his 2nd year at age 26) than Fields ever has been.
Oh, I know. Just figuring everybody was already firmly on board the bash Qualls train, it would be an easier comparison. Hell, I'll take Qualls NOW over Fields.
