Dammit, I try to get out and yall just pull me back in. I just looked this up to see if I was maybe crazy or didn't know what I was watching or something: among players with at least 300 innings, Fangraphs has Conger rated as the worst defensive catcher in baseball. I changed it to 200 IC and he's only 3rd worst...100 IC he's only 4th worst! Improvement! Argue with Fangraphs if you must, I'm done.
Oh, just in case I'm still crazy, look for yourself: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.as...am=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&page=1_30 Castro is the 7th best, btw, and the names above and around him lead me to believe that their methodology has some merit.
He's terrible (only a lunatic would argue otherwise)... but the steals allowed have not directly cost this team a game all year (likewise, Castro's better defense hasn't directly won a game either... and it just seems like he's been worse there this year compared to his career numbers). His bat is an assett... especially if Castro's bat goes in a prolonged slump again.
Our catchers have been worth a total of 2.5 WAR so far this year, which would rank 7th in team production. Not bad.
When you only throw 4 percent of the runners, those things will happen, but remember one thing, he did throw 24 percent the last couple of years.
