Official Chinese Slang thread: translation help needed

    It occurs to me that when the inevitable occurs and Houston drafts Yao Ming, the fans need to make him feel at home. One of the ways I think we can do that is with standard NBA slang-- in Chinese. Yelling "You the man!" or "Yao rules!" is OK, but it seems to me it might be more fun to learn these phrases (or their nearest equivalent) in Yao's native language.

    I know only a few phrases in Chinese, taught to me by an ex-girlfriend; they are either self-deprecatory ("I am a moron", "Yes dear, you are right") or... errr... not really appropriate for this context. I don't think telling Yao that we love him romantically is what we're going for.

    At least I hope not.

    Anyway, here is what I propose: we use this thread as one big translator type deal. If you want to inquire about how a basketball-related English phrase is spoken in Mandarin*, post it here. If you are able to provide the Mandarin translation, post it here.

    I think it could be fun, kind of interesting. Personally, I would like to know how to say the following:

    Peter Vecsey is a pinhead
    Bill Walton is a pinhead
    Yao should not be traded
    The #1 pick should not be traded
    Cuttino Mobley should shut up
    Cuttino Mobley is not the general manager of the Rockets
    Cuttino Mobley is expendable

    * I'm assuming Yao speaks Mandarin.

    Actually, BK, Walton has been one of Yao's biggest supporters, you may want to substitute someone else for him.

    I'm sure we can work in a few phrases your ex-girlfriend taught you...How about "Get off your lazy ass and do some g*dd*mn work!!" for when Kelvin Cato is in the game. :D

    Cuttino Mobley, expendable? Damn, we're drafting a guy who isn't even the best player in the draft and already people are acting like he's the franchise or a freakin basketball messiah. I guess we should just trade all the good players on this team so that Ming can get more touches. We could be the Ewing era Knicks, a bunch of CBA guys and a jump shooting center, I love this game! I've seen the future, and in it, Ming has an unspectacular year, Cato somehow manages to get his starting job back, and over 1 billion people in China will want Steve, Cat, and Rudy dead because they will blame them for Yao's rookie struggles. How do you say "reality check" in Chinese?

    But Bill Walton is always a pinhead, even when he's right. I mean, Bill Press is in favor of us winning the war on terrorism, and he's still a pinhead. :D

    I know one slang will be very cool when we are on offence.
    It is easy for shouting.
    In Chinese:
    YAO TA MING.(Kill him!)


    Yao rules----(just as)Yao Ming!Yao Ming!

    most common in chinese sports is something like


    Jia Yuo [j-ya , yo] which means add oil literally but is more like "add fire to the flames"

    and would be accompanied with beats... and his name.. .like

    jia yuo
    bum bum
    yao ming!
    bum bum
    jia yuo
    bum bum
    yao ming!

    1. ¼ÓÓÍ£º Jia-you [jia: you]

    used in offense, literally 'add gas', similar as 'Go' in English. Should be used before/after a player or a team, like

    Houston, jia-you
    Yao Ming, jia-you

    2. Å£±Æ£º niu-bi [new bee]

    literally translated as 'the female organ of a cow', it meaning 'very cool, very good, bad ass'. A liitle vulgar but believe me it is used very often in Chinese sports. Also it should be accompanied with a team name or a player name:

    Rockets, niu-bi
    niu-bi, yao ming

    3. ɵ±Æ£º sha-bi [sha: bee]

    literally 'stupid ****', and translated as 'you suck' . Usually used to shout to visiting teams. Vulgar but used pretty often.

    LA, Sha-bi
    Sha-bi, LA

    My Chinese friends at Acupuncture school are going to roll on the floor when I tell one of my American friends "sha-bi". :D

    I already hit the floor multiple times after reading this one. Try that on any of our opponents. That will surely confuse them and then they would be really offended by what they heard once they know what that means. LOL



    I think "Yao Ming" is pretty good by itself.

    Yao - sounds similar to another character "Yao" - want
    Ming - sounds similar to another character "Ming" - kill

    Therefore,

    "Yao Ming, Yao Ming, Yao Ming..."

    is equivallent to

    "Kill Them, Kill Them, Kill Them..."

    -- Pretty good during offensive plays.
    -- Something every one knows.
    -- The double meaning of Yao Ming!

    jia-yuo, or "add gas" is the one we should use.

    Jia You Yao Ming...

    meaning

    Try Harder to Kill Them!

    -----------------

    Jia You = "Jia Yuo" (Yuo should be spelled as "You" in Mainland Chinese, and it sounds like Yo as in Yo-Yo)
