I went to the game today and it was a lot of fun. I also made it in time to get the Andy Pettite commemorative jersey.
Incredible game - had a little bit of everything. Great pitching by Obie once he settled in and by Folty (crowd went wild after that strikeout pitch - 99mph), great defense by Grossman and Hoes, and great hitting all around. It was a taste of the good ol' days
I know Singleton strikes out a lot, and sometimes whiffs far away from the pitch, but I still like his big swing and he also seems to field his position well (especially in digging errant throws from the dirt). Looking forward to seeing him play next year... hoping he improves his eye and contact.
Extremely lucky to only be down 1 at this point. Feldman having trouble finding the strike zone at times today.
Not sure what games you have been watching, but Singleton seems to have a really hard time digging throws out. Just Friday night he misplayed an easy one into an error for Petit. He has already made 8 errors. Only 2 first basemen in all of MLB have more errors.
Agreed that he's below average defensively... if this team had a more competent 1B, or an additional quality batter, he'd be better suited as a DH.
I know most talk about Altuve's chances to win the batting title, but what does everyone think about him possibly winning the Silver Slugger? Can he dethrone Cano?
I thought I had read/heard that he had a reputation in the minors as being a good defensive 1B, but I haven't seen any indication of that with the Astros.
It just seems a little premature to judge him on his fielding. He is a rookie, and is going to look like one. He lacks some plate discipline and makes some errors. So far what I have seen is that he has the ability to hit for power. I expect his pitch selection and fielding to get better with exp.
