If the ".300" hitters keep slumping, then the series is on them. Cole and Verlander have been superb. The Rays are a very tough out, obviously. The Yanks coasted.
Just to reference what we're discussing here. The schedule below. Saturday, Oct. 12: ALCS Game 1, FOX or FS1 - Cole Sunday, Oct. 13: ALCS Game 2, FOX or FS1 - JV Tuesday, Oct. 15: ALCS Game 3, FOX or FS1 - Greinke Wednesday, Oct. 16: ALCS Game 4, FOX or FS1 - ?? Thursday, Oct. 17: ALCS Game 5 (if necessary), FOX or FS1 - Cole Saturday, Oct. 19: ALCS Game 6 (if necessary), FOX or FS1 - JV Sunday, Oct. 20: ALCS Game 7 (if necessary), FOX or FS1 - Greinke/Cole possibly
How did Leiter get charged for 5 earned runs when only allowing 3 base runners (on non-errors)? It looks like the Mets has two errors, so that must have been the two more base runners, but wouldn’t those be unearned if they reached on an error? Interestingly, he didn’t get the loss despite that line.
hmm in this scenario it puts both cole/JV on short rest. I guess it really depends on how the series starts out. It could be very possible if hou is in a hole. obviously we hope not though. really sucks miley completely fell off
Starting anyone on three days of rest is a risk, and it can easily backfire. It’s also not something you will see the Astros or any team do often. However, it’s a lot different asking veteran starters like Verlander and Cole to do it once in awhile rather than a young starter. Veteran starters have a much better understanding of how much rest and recovery time they need between starts. My point is the Astros aren’t going to have Verlander on a strict pitch count, and if Verlander didn’t think he could deliver six or seven innings of quality pitching, he wouldn’t have agreed to take the ball tonight.
Unless we are down 2-1 I think we pitch Urquidy game 4. To have ALL your pitchers going on 3 days especially since JV will already have one under his belt is asking for trouble. Stats don't favor pitchers on 3 days rest. They lost 2/3's of those games. Too bad on of Aaron Sanches, Colin McHugh, Brad Peacock or Wade Miley couldn't have been viable. That is a lot of missing starting arms and has left us with a skeleton pitching staff.
Peacock is a possible option to be added to the ALCS. I forgot about that. Hinch mentioned previously he still wanted him to get some work in during the ALDS in case hes added
Yeah, Miley completely losing it AFTER the trade deadline, Sanchez going down, Biagini being untrustworty, and McHugh going down (and Pressly not quite back to form yet) put us in a tough spot. We literally lost 2 (1 for sure) starters and 2 (1 for sure) relievers (as Biagini was supposed to be a solid return). Miley is obviously the biggest hit, McHugh being right behind him. Oh well, that's October baseball, the Yankees certainly know something about dealing with injuries yet there they are waiting for us.
Of course, Verlander thinks he can deliver six or seven innings of quality pitching tonight. He's a fighter. Questions are: Can he?, and if he can't, will Hinch pull him quickly enough that it doesn't go down hill? JV: Tis but a short rest. Hinch: Your arms fell off like McHugh's. JV: Just a flesh wound. I can go another 3 innings. I'm not too concerned early unless his velocity is down. Just worried Hinch leaves him in too long.
I hope some day we get a satisfactory explanation for the Miley Mystery. What an absolute dagger to a team. Worse than any of the injuries and at the same time compounded by them.
Look folks. We have to win tonight. I think the team is going to break out offensively and get out to a big lead. Then Hinch can rest Verlander early. Tampa is a good pesky foe but there is no doubt who has the better lineup. It’s time for this lineup to wake up and they will. Destruction at 6pm
The main thing I take heart from is that JV has such impeccable mechanics that he's probably the best starter in the league to throw a short-rest game with little to no consequences, during or after. I'm not saying abuse that and keep him in too long, but I do feel good that it's him going on short rest and not Cole. And JV doesn't need electric speed to get guys out as long as he maintains control.
I think he is added unless his arm isn’t sound. At this point there is no reason Miley should be carried. Would you trust Miley in a 2-1 game and only needing to get 1 left handed batter out? If you don’t then you drop Miley and add Peacock if you go 12 pitchers in the LCS maybe Devo? But then who do you drop. You are not dropping Diaz, Maldanado or Marisnick. I would probably drop Straw. Tucker may still come to life with a bat and is fast enough I think. If Correas back goes he is probably done for 2019 you can replace him.
