Harper and Boras got owned. They wanted the biggest contract ever and held that title for 2 weeks, only to get bested by Trout by $90 million. Also who knows if Harper accepted less because he thought the Phillies could sign Trout.
Gio has four things working against him: 1) There is growing evidence that teams don't trust ERA or ERA-based WAR for projecting future performance. 2) Teams have spent what they want to spend for 2019. The money left is likely trying to court Keuchel and Kimbrel. 3) Teams are not betting on age unless the player is great (not counting ERA). 4) There isn't a motivation for most teams to try to win maybe 1-2 more games.
How did they get "owned"? Mike Trout is a vastly superior player and deserves the additional money he will be receiving.
Ego. It was very important for them to have the biggest contract ever. That's why they wouldn't accept higher AAV on a shorter deal. They wanted that $300 million number. They held that title for exactly two weeks until Trout embarrassed them with his contract extension.
Bryce Harper and Manny Machado together from 2012-2018 produced 60.9 WAR. Over that same time, Trout has produced 64.0 WAR. Trout is somehow still underpaid!
Trout was always going to make more than Harper, because he's simply a vastly better player. I doubt this surprised Harper at all, much less embarrassed him. Trout's worst WAR season is 1.5 better than Harper's 2nd best. Harper has had one monster year, 3 very good years, and 3 very WTF years. For example: both Marisnick and Reddick's WAR last year were higher than those 3 Harper years. Also:
I don't think anyone disgreed that Trout would ultimately make more. But Harper waited until Machado signed and then took a lower AAV, more years, and no opt-outs, etc. A lot of people feel his goal was not the money itself but to be able to say he signed the largest deal ever. I think he assumed Trout's big deal wouldn't come for another two years when he was in a free agent bidding war, rather than 2 weeks later as an extension. That said, it's hard to say someone got owned when they made $325MM despite being nowhere close to the best player in baseball.
I would like to apply for the position of being owned by making 330 million over the next decade please.
The first round pick compensation goes away in June. I don't know if DK will hold out, it will be interesting to see what happens.
Bregman is going to end up having a longer and better career than Correa. I wish the Astros would have pleased him and just have given him the extra 500K that they had given Correa the year before.
Trout is so preposterously good, this ludicrous extension doesn't seem bad. Maybe even a little on the cheap side as AAV goes.
Like ive said plenty of times before, Bregman is all about the money. Hes said that the only reason he really does the youtube stuff is because his agent got him on it. He wants to get paid
He plays hard, is a great player and teammate and good person. Nothing wrong with maximizing your earning potential
https://twitter.com/ESanders_10/status/1108014485632098304 Hopefully we see more parents taking their kids out of football and transitioning them into mlb in the next few decades. MLB has such a competitive advantage over NFL/NBA as they have won the "latin" crowd over. That new Nike/MLB deal is going to turn around alot of stuff for baseball in the next decade.
Eh - Trout is one of the 4 or 5 best players in history. And he's getting $35MM per year. The top NBA players make about the same amount per year. The average NFL QB is getting $20MM / yr - the top ones are in the $30MM range. And in those sports, you don't have to play 5-8 years and prove yourself before getting paid. You get potentially 10's of millions guaranteed right out of the draft even if you fail miserably. There's tradeoffs in each sport that make the economics different, but there are pluses and minuses for each. The top players get paid in all sports. Mediocre players never get paid in MLB, but you get better/longer guarantees. NFL players have less security, but more freedom of movement. Etc.
lol.....bro Lebron in his lifetime has only made 230 million. And idk what you're talking about in regards to NFL contracts seeing how Aaron rodgers latest contract only gave him 110 guaranteed. What NFL quarterback has 200 million guaranteed? Care to share....?
