It doesn't look like reed dropped any weight but who knows. I can't tell the difference between 275lb and 260lb very well.
I'd hope so being with the best strength and conditioning trainers the Astros have, nutritionists, etc Reed having a big spring, making the team and coming close to 2015 season production would be huge. I'm pulling for him making the necessary learning curve from AAA competition. Having the option of a Reed/Gurriel platoon at 1B, Gurriel occasionally spelling Bregman, Altuve and whoever in LF. Gives Hinch the most flexibility amongst position players in baseball.
Being a disgusting fatbody does not preclude someone from hitting...see: David Ortiz, John Kruk, Prince Fielder, etc... We can only hope.
Sure. But those guys actually did hit. If you're fat, and not hitting, the solution shouldn't be to get fatter... which seemed to be Reed's strategy last year. I'd bet his bat speed was at an all-time low for his baseball playing career.
Solution is to hit. Sure being slimmer may help run out a couple of hits or help bat speed slightly...but he wasn't making anywhere close to enough contact, much less hard contact.
I'm just saying they're not mutually exclusive. You know I've said he needs to slim down, because it can't hurt, right? His problem was the long, slow swing. Is that weight related? I'd like to find out. Also, I loved Steve Balboni And Bob Hamelin was ROY until the next year... I always loved the Royals because George Brett was my baseball hero and favorite player.
It wasn't, but it isn't the primary reason he didn't hit and he doesn't deserve the amount of ridicule he has received for it.
AJ Reed on July 1 (first MLB hit) AJ Reed at Kentucky (won the Golden Spikes as the best player in college baseball) His swing got long, fix that. Look at the difference in the size of his forearms and legs. The guy can hit, I wouldn't give up on him at all. At worst he has a Daryl Ward career, which ain't all bad from his perspective.
Do you have the pic of him in September? I don't think the MLB clubhouse spreads and MLB level per diem was a good thing for him. Here's to hoping he takes it a little more seriously/professionally this time around.
I know that pic was funny but it wasn't fair at all. If you're the national pitcher and hitter of the year does that mean you get *both* buffet coupons?
