This is a depressing loss, assuming no late miracle. Astros had Strasburg out of the game (PH) and the score somehow tied at 2... perfect opportunity to steal one... and Lombardozzi gets a perfectly placed, jam-shot double to break it open. I know a lot of folks will blame Mills for not going to the bullpen, but Weiland delivered a good pitch and the Nats got lucky. Three hard-luck losses in four nights, it looks like...
CF Maxwell, SS Lowrie, LF Martinez, 1B Lee, 3B Johnson, RF Buck, C Snyder, 2B Altuve, P Wandy Desmond 6, Espinosa 4, Zimmerman 5, Werth 8, LaRoche 3, DeRosa 9, Nady 7, Flores 2, Gonzalez 1
To be fair, Schafer's OBP is around the same as Altuve, but Schafer is more of a SB threat. Lowrie's OBP is higher than either of their's Granted, Altuve has the higher SLG by a longshot, but I have a hard time believing that differential will keep up.
How many hard-luck losses can one team have? On the verge of blowing a spectacular start from Wandy because we blew consecutive routine pop-ups. I know it's part of the game, but really wished the bad luck wasn't happening so early... would love for a young team like this to get more positive reinforcement.
Both Lee and Martinez have cooled off and Altuve sitting at the 8th spot can do little to help. I'd much rather see Schafer at the 8th spot than Altuve. I guess ideally Altuve batting 2nd behind. Hopefully Mills makes a change for tomorrow.
Agree that some changes--for example, dropping Buckosevic/Snastro to 7/8--might be worth a shot. You like Altuve better than Lowrie at 2? Man. When you think about it, Astros fans have been consistently reminded in the past several years that is difficult to arrange four or five competent hitters in a nine-man lineup in such a way as to consistently produce runs.
Altuve seems like he is going to be a very good hitter. Schafer not so much. Would it be totally ridiculous to put Lowrie at the top of the order? Being able to manufacture a run is great and all but so are big innings. Lowrie Altuve Martinez Lee Johnson Buckosevic Snastro Schafer P
I know you guys are high on this kid and I wish him well too ... but I think Jason Castro is a bust. I know I know is still early and he's still young (24).... but Career 74 games .196 BA 2 HR 10 RBI
