O.J. Simpson -- one of the most infamous high-profile Americans of all time -- is dead after a cancer battle.

The former NFL great -- who stood trial for the double-murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in the '90s, only to be acquitted -- passed away Wednesday in Las Vegas ... this according to his family.

They say he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren when he died Wednesday night. Simpson's attorney also confirmed his death to TMZ.

O.J. had reportedly been battling prostate cancer in recent years, and his health took a turn for the worse of late -- with him landing in hospice care within the past few months.

This is sad, he was only 76 years old.

I don't know if he ever married or had kids, but if he did - my thoughts and prayers are with them.

It is always hard to lose a husband or father.

In his prime he was a top 3-4 running back of all time.

Between 1972 and 1976 Simpson was the best football player in the world, and it is probably the best prime of any NFL running back in history. 5 first team All Pro selections. Led the league in rushing 4x in 5 seasons. Led the league in total rushing yards in that period, led the league in touchdowns and had the greatest single season ever by a running back when he rushed for over 2,000 yards in 14 games and had 16 touchdowns.

Were you alive in his prime?

In his prime, OJ was the GOAT. Jim Brown might disagree, though. Barry Sanders might have been better at making defenders look foolish, but he came later.

WRT GOAT talk ... I think it is best to only consider players from the same era. Who knows if Simpson, Brown and Sanders played the same years who would be the best? They might have had/found an extra gear if they had to compete against each other.

There are others that were in that same discussion as greatest of all time in a 4-5 year time frame...... Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Jim Brown and Barry Sanders all come to mind.

No - I wasn't alive in his prime, but I have seen most of his games from his prime in the early 70's. Right after his peak, Earl Campbell emerged and flamed out - then Eric Dickerson had a run that was amazing.

Compared to other RBs in his era, OJ was way, way better.

If you look at highlights from OJ's best years today, you can see that Barry Sanders compares favorably, maybe even better than OJ. But no one from OJ's era or before could make tacklers miss like OJ.
