Any ideas what the punishment will be? Will the Stros get some sort of "payback" like a draft pick or something from the Cardinals? I thought I read that somewhere but can't remember.

Most likely cold hard cash only.

Edit: I suspect Cardinals will lose picks, but Astros will likely only get money.

I think that an appropriate punishment for the Cards would be the loss of their comp pick.

The punishment will most likely depend on what information the Commissioner's office gets from the authorities. We may get to find out whether others in the Cardinals front office were involved too.

I think they should have to relinquish the title of "best fans in baseball".

He had already been convicted before today, correct? Today was just a sentencing hearing. WTF has MLB been waiting for? Why is it relevant that it's a criminal matter to MLB? I don't understand why they'd now be starting an investigation.

Probably because they'll now have access to all the info the feds already investigated? They probably won't have to do much work on their own.

I'm guessing it's so that they don't have to waste time and resources to investigate something the Feds already did all the leg work on.

Right. Federal gopher walks into Manfred's office and dumps a box on the table.

    OK, that'll do.

This will be interesting, because the feds don't often provide details of their investigations to outside entities. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply point to the public records, i.e., the hearing transcripts and indictment, and say "there's your details, we can't give you anything more." Of course, what's missing is whether Correa provided his info up the chain of command in St. Louis, and if so, what the others did (or didn't do).

I'm sure the feds gave him an opportunity to implicate anybody else he may have shared info with... in exchange for a possibly reduced sentence.

Wow, almost four years. Did not expect that. The Commish has to drop the hammer on the Cards now. Huge fine, loss of draft picks, etc.

He did indicate he shared info with his colleagues (this is from the January hearing; apparently, whatever he shared with his colleagues wasn't bad enough to warrant additional indictments, but MLB might dig deeper into what he shared):

Correa, who pleaded guilty to five counts of unauthorized access into the Astros system, emphasized that his initial intention for hacking into the team’s system was to see if the Astros had stolen anything from the Cards.

Correa acknowledged he ended up doing much more than that.

“I originally accessed, trespassed the Astros’ resources based on suspicions that they had misappropriated proprietary work from myself and my colleagues,” Correa said.

Hughes asked if he found any Cardinals information, and Correa said he did.

“Who did you tell?,” Hughes asked.

    “Colleagues,” Correa said.

Hughes asked for a clarification that Correa meant colleagues at the Cardinals, and Correa confirmed that was whom he was talking about. He did not name anyone in specific, and no one else has been charged.
