http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/44624-now-thats-what-i-call-indie-comp-revealed All you hipsters better get ready to see high school girls at your next concert.
I'm afraid that, in the end, I'm just not hip enough to listen to this CD. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get over it.
I've checked out some Of Montreal, and I think what happens is they want you thinking about the titles of their songs so hard that you don't actually listen to them. Pretty darn mediocre.
CYHSY had a great debut album, but that Satan song from Album #2 that this mix has on it makes me want to stick needles in my eardrums
i already have all that music. i am old. i like high school girls. of montreal is transplendant, sorry you don't like them. high school girls. high...
If that happens - high school girls coming to these bands' concerts, then those bands are no longer "indie".
That is the most interesting song name I have ever seen. Not interesting enough to actually listen to it, but intriguing none the less. I mean what's next, Death Note of the Languished Arcadian Introvert?
'Indie' has gone through the same transformation that 'Alternative' did. 'Alternative' actually meant that the song/artist was considered an alternative to established genres/top 40 music. It was sort of the same thing as 'college rock' used to be - stuff like R.E.M. in the early eighties. Later, it was transformed by marketers into a genre with a particular sound - note that they still called Bush and Matchbox 20 and Seven Mary Three 'alternative' bands even when they all had number one hits on the top forty charts. 'Indie' originally referred to music that was released/promoted by non-major-label bands and had no real defining sound associated with it. Now, it's a genre - the highish warbly male voice, some non-standard instrumentation, etc.,. Ain't none of it 'indie' no more. There's still genuine independent music out there, but now it doesn't have a category.
Whatever.... I'm buying the original Now CD series so I can stay ahead of the hippster curve. Like when I went back 2 listening to the original Simian "Never be Alone" when everyone was slamming the Justice remix "We Are Your Friends."
Not sure if Interpol is indie, but there were a lot of little high school girls there. Very distracting. Also, how is Sonic Youth indie? They have been around since the '80s. I guess they just get lumped in to whatever new sound comes along, since they were considered alternative in the '90s.
The best Indie was Pavement but they blew up. Cursive is kind of holding their torch now. Bright Eyes was the new big Indie kahuna now they are bigger than aids. Sonic Youth has stayed in the same exact spot for the past 20yrs.
I never understood what was "alternative" about white boys playing electric guitars, electric bass, and drums.
