i sure hope dischord records gets some serious ca$h from nike for this one.
i can't post the image, so here's the link:

    Nike Campaign "Borrows" Album Art

    Rob Kleckner reports:
Exhibit A: Classic cover art for Minor Threat's self-titled 1984 compilation.
Exhibit B: Nike Skateboarding's poster image for its "Major Threat" 2005 East Coast Tour.

You don't need a degree in graphic design to notice the similarities here. They're the ****ing same. Oh, wait-- one is blue, not red. And Major, not Minor. And there are some Nike logos tossed in there. This brings to mind an interview with Vanilla Ice, defending the differences between "Ice Ice Baby" and "Under Pressure" ("dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun" vs. "DUN dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun").

Come on, Nike, your Swoosh is one of the most iconic brand images in the world, perhaps a tiny notch below the Golden Arches and maybe Coca-Cola; you don't need to be appropriating another culture for yourselves.

But Nike is smart enough to know better, right? They must have asked permission. We spoke to a representative from Dischord Records, Minor Threat's label, if Nike had asked to borrow these images. They said the following: "No, they stole it and we're not happy about it. Nike is a giant corporation which is attempting to manipulate the alternative skate culture to create an even wider demand for their already ubiquitous brand. Nike represents just about the antithesis of what Dischord stands for and it makes me sick to my stomach to think they are using this explicit imagery to fool kids into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission. It's disgusting."

Dischord is not sure of what action they are going to take, but you can tell they are not happy with Nike's choice. We will keep you updated as we learn more about the situation.

Wow. The world's most independent band and record label getting ripped off by NIKE. Ian MacKaye must have spontaneously died, buried himself and spun in his grave.

No way in HELL Dischord or MacKaye would EVER have agreed to this. Not for any amount of money.

It would be funny if someone at Nike passed that off as original to their bossed and no one noticed till now.

I sent some hatemail to Nike. I might use a swoosh as my new company logo.

Not surprisingly, Nike makes you dig for their contact info on their site. I'm sure I'm not the first person that has sent them hatemail. If anyone else feels the urge, go to http://www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=37 .

I'm pretty sure it's for an old draft, seeing as how the draft is on Thursday the 28th on ESPN

While I agree that Nike is 110% in the wrong here, deserves whatever monetary punishment they get and that the Dischord reps have a right to be pissed off, I would hardly call it disgusting.

I'm a huge Minor Threat fan and this is insulting on many levels ~ that ad is the exact opposite of everything the band is about.

I hope nike gets f'ing nailed.

yup. that's total bullsh*t. quite ironic since nike stands for everything MT was against.

that album rocks though. wish mine hadn't got stolen several years ago.

Ahh the music of my youth. That album, 13 Songs & Repeater are still in the rotation. Are any of their more recent albums any good?

    Screw nike.

Can't top those two albums, but I thought that, "The Argument" (2001) was pretty good.

Tell me you have 'In on the Killtaker,' Buck. That was probably the last one with that fierce sound you found in '13 Songs' and 'Repeater.' But they evolved as a band.. something 99.99% of the bands in the world cannot do. you totally hear it:

    Red Medicine- experimental phase
    End Hits- more creative, unique
    Arguement- mature and polished.

    Man, I miss Fugazi.

Oh, and the Nike screw up simply justifies Ian Mackaye's profound stance in resisting the plague of commercialism over all these years. He was, and still is, my role model. Ian and Dischord won't seek any monetary punishment.. He'll just say, "f*k you" and turn the other way.

I always liked minor Threat, but I could never get into Fugazi beyond 13 Songs.

Raven - maybe you are a little too young? Or never got into early 80's punk?
