The NFL made a mistake I think here. The refs explained at the time why he got the penalty, it wasn't his prayer, it was the slide, Abdullah acknowledged and accepted this. There was no need to go back and say they did anything wrong, because they didn't. You can do prayers, you just can't slide into a prayer. Abdullah knows this, he just got excited, like most other players who go into any other celebration dance...even JJ Watt!!
I don't think the refs ever said that. He never asked them he just guessed. This isn't controversial. The player doesn't care, the NFL said it isn't a flag, who exactly is upset here?
Where did the refs explain this? After the game, the coach and the player said they thought it was from the slide. If it had been explained, wouldn't they have said that with certainty? I would think it's more likely that the ref didn't realize it was a prayer (fairly understandable) and flagged him for a celebration on the ground, which is illegal if it's not a prayer.
