I firmly believe that McHale will only have 1 more season left with the Rockets, if he makes it past this one. While 50+ win seasons are nice, they don't mean much if the team can't contend for a championship, and teams like the Rockets that give up over 102+ points per game don't win championships. So, that being said, who should the Rockets consider bringing in to replace McHale?
I think the Rockets organization is hoping it will be Chris Finch. But if the Rockets lose out on HCA and end up losing to the Blazers/Warriors in the 1st round, Les may decide to clean house. I think the difficulty lies in the fact that Dwight Howard came to Houston to learn under McHale and most of the players enjoy playing for him, but in terms of Xs and Os and schemes McHale is average. I think keeping the players happy is more important, but their happiness may not be enough to win a championship which requires very good coaching.
Pay Pops double of what he's getting in SA and get him here to start a new system. Once his system is established and we get an equal-minded replacement, he can retire in peace and we'll be a powerhouse for the next 2 decades. Or Chris Finch.
I'm not saying I would pick Finch, but Morey probably would. That's why he's an assistant coach in the first place.
I'll play devil's advocate and disagree. I think the Rockets are one big impact player away from taking it all. Howard likes McHale, and I don't think anyone here has any reason to think that Harden doesn't like McHale as well. And I think Morey does also, although we have no real clues about that. So I think if Morey works his magic and gets Star Number Three for next season, you'll see McHale's Rockets win the championship. And because the players like playing for him, this likely means McHale will still be the "next head coach."
Just head over to the ESPN/NBATV studios and have your pick! That's where we got our current coach. Avery Johnson? George Karl? P.J. Carlesimo? Doug Collins? Jeff Van Gundy? Stan Van Gundy? Hubie Brown? Lionel Hollins? Mike Fratello? Sam Mitchell?
I really like Hubie Brown but he's probably retired. I would choose either Karl or Hollins, I can't see any of the Van Gundy's working with Dwight.
Can we get BOTH of the Van Gundy brothers on this team? That would make for epic sideline humor and post game interview awesomeness.
