The current NBA Players CBA could expire as early as next June 30 if the teams or players opt-out. If not, it will expire a year later. Much has been made of the potential for lowering the minimum age requirement for the NBA, but I believe that the Rockets may be able benefit from other less publicized aspects of the CBA.

For example, I think the most obvious changes that could affect the Rockets are to rules regarding rookie contract extensions like the Restricted Free-Agency, Designated Rookie, and Rose rules. Currently, the Rockets have 11 players on their rookie contract, so any rules that give the drafting team an added advantage to resign their players should be a major help in keeping the core together. Other changes that might help the Rockets could be changes to rules regarding trading draft picks, salary matching in trades, max/supermax contracts, salary cap/floor, two-way contracts, draft lottery odds, playoff/play-in changes, and new or changed player contract exceptions.

This may take some creative thinking, but it is well worth it. If we at Clutchfans can identify an area that gives us a competitive advantage, there is enough time to make a push to get the necessary changes made. We can mobilize all the loyal Rockets fans and also convince more persuasive fanbases that the changes benefit them.

    Some ideas:
Increase in the number of designated rookies
    Increase in max contract length
Exceptions for teams that bought out international rookie contracts
Changes to salary matching in trades
Changes to draft pick trading rules
    New/More Players exceptions for tax/non-taxpayers
    Rose Rule changes/exceptions
    Changes to draft pick odds
