I've got a 4 port router and 4 computers plugged in. I'm trying to hook up my xbox to the router as well by running a cable through the attic and make it 5 computers. How do I go about doing this without buying a new router?

I'm looking to basically take one of the ports on the router and make it into two or more ethernet ports. One guy was saying on ebay that an RJ45 (cat 5e, cat 5) splitter was not the answer and that a ethernet switch/hub was.

Any advice on this? Does that sound about right?

Buy a hub and connect to your router.

Yup... get a switch/hub and uplink into your existing router. Piece o' pie. The hardest part should be running that wire through your attic. :D

Sweet, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Tell me about it. Running the wire was NOT fun at all. I did that portion of it today. I wasn't smart about it and before I knew it I was up there just short sleeves and shorts. Little itchy now, but it's not that bad. The worst part was the ever so decreasing head space as I got near the point I wanted to drill at, lol.

This might seem like a dumb question but what kind of cable am I running from the router to the switch/hub? A cat 5/5e cable too?

If you ever plan on using a gigabit network (or are now), use minimum 5e. If it's a 100 megabit network, cat5 will do.

If you upgrade cabling down the road, use the old cables to strangle the Rockets...

    edit:

Holy ****. I remembered they played today just now and man I should NOT have looked at that box score. Wow.
