perhaps the Cable companies will fill this void
they already have a deal with the individual stations
even the studios with their on demand.

That is exactly what they SHOULD do, but that sort of cuts their own throat a bit because they sell advertising on their own.

I cancelled after being a customer for a while and I am not looking back.

With Netflix, the Discs and Streaming complimented each other. I don't think either one stands on it's own very well. At least not yet.

I think the greed of the movie studios is going to lead to even more piracy of their content. I mean it was so cheap to get it legally with services like Netflix. You can only raise the prices on your customers so much before they say F you and find another alternative.

Funny thing is, I rarely get worked up over things, but for whatever reason, Netflix really pissed me off.

so the last two movies i have gotten (newer releases) have 6-8 minutes of previews that i am not allowed to skip thru in order to start the movie. ive had netflix for a couple years now and have never gotten a dvd w/ this garbage. i was already thinking of cancelling but making me watch a preview of "bring it on: the musical" is the final straw.

I used to be able to watch the bonus materials on previous dvds they sent in the past but now the newer DVDs do not allow you to watch bonus materials. WTF. I really don't want to cancel the service because I love watching movies. :(

    http://www.seattlepi.com/business/article/Analyst-Netflix-split-is-set-up-for-Amazon-deal-2183638.php

There's a ton of speculation that Amazon split it up to sell half of the business off, but I assumed it would sell the DVD shipping side of things and not the streaming business, especially since their CEO has talked about the DVD shipping model dying out in the not too distant future. If they sold the streaming side to Amazon, I would be all over this. With the cost of an Amazon Prime membership, I could get the combined streaming library of these two AND free two day shipping on all purchases. All that for less ($75 annual) than what I'm paying for Netflix streaming ($96 annual).

Pachter can be hit and miss when he is wildly speculating, but the guy has a ton of contacts and usually is on the money with his predictions.

I think I am cancelling Netflix and do RedBox instead... We only watch maybe 2 movies a month. The price is not worth it anymore.

For people who have used RedBox, thoughts??

I haven't checked recently, but when you buy Amazon Prime you only get a portion of their streaming content, and the selection was lacking.

Redbox's selection of new movies is pretty good, significantly better than Netflix's streaming selection, but you'll probably be out of luck on old movies and TV shows.

The DVD by mail option is better than Redbox if you watch more than five or six movies a month.

Redbox blows away netflix. You get it instantly, and you only get charged for what you watch. I would often only end up watching 3-4 movies a month on netflix. It was worth it before the price hike, certainly not now. I've never had a single problem with redbox, and i've been using it for 2 years.

Like the guy before me said, selection of old flicks is low. But you can usually watch old movies for free online somewhere.

    Thanks guys...

I looked Redbox up online...you have to return it next day.

One thing I liked about netflix was that I didn't have to worry about returning it next day.

Is it $1 for a DVD?

Yes, $1/day for a DVD, due back at 9pm the following day. I think it is $1.50 now for Blu-ray, but seeing as I don't have a Blu-ray player, I'm really unsure about that.

Its $1 per day for a DVD. Whats nice about redbox is that you can go online and reserve your copy the minute it comes out. Then you go up to the kiosk, slide your card and pops out, all less than a minute.

The downside to redbox is that it faces some of the restrictions as other content providers; They may not get a new release immediately and have to wait 3-4 weeks before they have it available.

Blockbuster kiosks work the same way. I have noticed blockbuster will have some new releases sooner than redbox, but they charge 2.99 for the early content. For example, blockbuster has the new xmen for 2.99 but redbox doesn't have it right now. In a couple weeks once redbox gets it, they will both offer it for $1.

Anyone use Blockbuster Online? I'm thinking about using them for DVDS, but are they as fast as Netflix?
