about the same as playmakers, nash's slightly better shooting isn't even close to offsetting both stockton's slightly higher scoring or more importantly, his vastly better defense
If we were talking about who's the better floor-general, then we'd have a conversation. Since we're talking overall better player, notsomuch. Stockton, and it's not close.
Stat and Marion were nowhere close to where Malone was. I think Stockton is clearly better, the gap just isn't big as many on here perceive it to be.
Agreed. If we only look at the offense we have a discussion. But stockton was a great defensive player and nash not so much.
Nash is a better 3pt shooter and shoots more 3pt shots. His eFG% is .556 compared to Stockton's .546. The difference is not that much. Both are highly efficient shooters. If they had a shooting contest, my bet would be on Nash. Stockton didn't take bad shots. So his percentage was very good over a long career.
wtf? Nash almost averaged a career 50-40-90 He was .490 | .428 | .904 for his CAREER. That is insane After his first three learning years, he was a 50-40-90 the rest of his career covering 15 yrs. For his entire PHO career spanning 744 NBA games he was .504 | .435 | .907 He was 50-40-90 five seasons in a row while being the best passer in the league, surpassing Kidd, imo. And his scoring significantly increased in the playoffs. Scoring more than CP3. Appreciate the voting. Like I said in the OP, tough call.
Stockton was a two way player...He was Nash with defense...case and point...He is the all time steals leader in the NBA.
I have to agree with those who say it really isn't that close...Stockton by a good margin. No one is even close to him in steals. 1 John Stockton 3,265 2 Jason Kidd 2,684 3 Michael Jordan 2,514 In assists, Stockton dominated: 1. John Stockton 15806 2. Jason Kidd 12091 3. Steve Nash 10335 4. Mark Jackson 10334 5. Magic Johnson 10141 IMO, its Stockton by a wide margin over Nash and much wider margin over Paul.
As time passes, I don't hate players like I used to... Stockton, Malone, Robinson. Maybe Duncan will get some love from me at a later date. #timehealsall
Not to mention that during his 19 season career out of 1526 regular season games he missed... 22 games. That's... missing around 1 game per season... over 19 years... Has there been a more durable player ever?
^^ Stocktons total Assists means nothing. Magic and Bird are the best passers ever. Nash, Kidd and Stockton are all tied for 3rd after that. For the record, ppl are making sound like Stockton played his entire career with hand checking?? Hand checking was ended in 1994 Stockton played over half his playoff games in the no hand-checking era. It actually drastically reduced his Steals per game numbers. It drastically reduced SPG across the league, especially for PGs. Nash was the better offensive player. Stockton's defense was better, but PG defense doesn't really win you games unless you are Payton or Rondo types. PG defense is overrated for its affect on wins. Nash proves that in his playoff success. Nash averaged 10 playoff games per year. Stockton was less than that. Nash's playoff numbers are significantly better than his regular season, while Stockton's numbers show a noticeable drop in the playoffs. Tough call for me. Not seeing this huge difference that the stat geeks are pointing to. Step away from the stats and watch the playoffs. Nash got stopped twice by the Spurs in two years of their title runs. Both times they would have won the Title had the Spurs not beat them. And Nash had huge playoffs. The second time the refs stole the series from Nash in the Horry hit incident. That was Nash's year. And sure, Utah got stopped by MJ too. tough call for me....very close
so you're comparing: nash lost to the spurs in the west finals 2x, not even the nba finals stockton lost to MJ's bulls in the nba finals 2x, yes to the GOAT not even close
I do think Nash is the better offensive player but Stockton's advantage on defense is big enough to render it irrelevant. But this is an incredible stat -
