A question was posed by a colleague of mine today, "Would you fly on a plane where the pilot's name is Mohammed?" What does the group say? Would you be OK with it, or would it give you pause? One of the Egypt Air pilots name was Mohammed, for reference.

If given the choice between a pilot named John and a pilot named Mohammed, I'd have to imagine 99% of Americans would choose John if the vote were private. But is that racism or just being safe/smart?

racism. It is almost the definition of racism.

    But you know that.

Is it? I'm not so sure:

One can be concerned about the pilot without believing that all members of that race are people with an issue. It is more a matter of being concerned about the odds being higher...which, btw, they are. We have that one pilot in Europe who intentionally flew the plane into the mountain...have there been any others? There haven't been many with Islamic backgrounds, either...but more than that, and that is considering that they likely have fewer pilots as well. So, odds are higher, although still very low.

One could also have a concern about this without any belief that their race is inferior, or that one's race is superior.

So, no, I don't think it is the very definition of racism. Some shades of racism...yes, probably. But not nearly to the degree you infer, IMHO. Certainly it would seem to be a debatable topic.

Thinking that a person is dangerous just because his name is Mohammed is thinking his race is inferior. When someone is called Mohammed that does not mean hè is religious. His parents were probably religious. But you do not know if he is religious.

You can debate if race is why you do not trust him. Since people from different races are called Mohammed. But that is arguing semantics. It is being a bigot.

I disagree as well. There are many times bigotry or racism is used to define someone when I would simply state rather that they are probably "ignorant" or "fearful"...perhaps both.

Religion is not a race. There are white, Asian and black guys called Mohammed. Could be any race.

I assume that is if someone decides during their lifetime to leave Islam. Sadly, hundreds of millions of Muslims think that such a person should be killed.

Yes, bigotry by definition is broader than racism. And what TJ is demonstrating is Bigotry. Prejudice, bigotry, racism is often clothed in things like common sense, safety, just noticing a trend. It's what used to justify discrimination.

But keep in mind that bigots are 90% of the time unaware of their prejudice and when you call it out you will be attacked.

Do you have any statistical evidence to the contrary?

No she didn't. She had this photo on her Facebook some time ago:

I think it is more likely that it is just a tragic coincidence that her life ended that way.

Statistically speaking, you should be scared of Andreas, and you should stay the f**k away from lover pilots.
