"X-MEN" SPINOFF FILM "NEW MUTANTS" OFFICIAL AT FOX

20th Century Fox's "X-Men" film franchise is expanding -- Josh Boone is signed to direct and co-write "The New Mutants," sharing a title with the Marvel comic that first debuted in 1982.

"We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters," X-Men franchise veteran and "New Mutants" producer Simon Kinberg tells Deadline.

Boone, director of massive 2014 hit "The Fault in Our Stars," is set to co-write with Knate Gwaltney, who wrote upcoming thriller "Kidnap" (starring X-Men franchise vet Halle Berry) and worked on several "Jackass" productions. Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner, who has worked on all of Fox's X-Men films.

"The New Mutants" looks to be a couple years away, as Boone has been linked to "The Vampire Chronicles" (based on the work of Anne Rice) and "The Stand" (an adaptation of the Stephen King novel). Deadline states he'd been targeted by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios for the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, though he wasn't on the reported shortlist of choices that surfaced last week.

No details have yet been released as to which New Mutants the film will feature, though Deadline describes the film as starring "a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers." The original New Mutants team, introduced by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982's "Marvel Graphic Novel" #4, consisted of Cannonball, Karma, Mirage (Dani Moonstar), Sunspot and Wolfsbane; new, teenaged students at Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

They need the biggest "young" up-and-comer to be in this movie to draw audiences.

Shame that JLaw was already Mystique.

Can Fox just give up the rights already? Would be epic to see Magneto lift Thor's hammer with his mind.

I believe the original X-Factor is the right franchise to launch alongside the existing one. New Mutants was never relevant.

Heavy sci-fi, 80s latex horror, & a sword wielding demoness. Throw in some old school Degrassi Junior High drama. What's not to like? Of course we won't get that from Fox.

Remember when there were other movies besides comic book adaptations?

    or
    I guess after The Hobbit/The Stand/Carrie/Etc Etc
one could say: Remember when there were other movies besides book adaptations?
The source material doesn't matter. . . only that it is good.

    Could be good . .. . . .but I doubt it

Get over it. Comics are part of the American culture. Nerds grew up, came into their own and started using them as source material. It's an easy sell to make a movie- it's already storyborded. It's also original writing and not a remake, which I'm grateful for.

Comic book movies are genre, like horror movies, romcoms and action flicks. not a fad. They have been around a long time and are here to stay, so everyone better get used to it.

Look at this massive list of comic movies and tell me that there weren't some of these that you didn't enjoy:

I'm not sure what they're trying to do here besides make some money off of a completed project (which they should). The first tip that this isn't an official Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was the 20th Century Fox logo.

The timing on this is interesting. I'm wondering if they are going to use it to kickstart the MCU mutants, or play up the MCU multiverse.

The casting looks good, but I'm not a big fan of the characters so for all I know it may be way off!

It looked good. I had goose bumps there for the first part. Something original, I thought. But they gave away the whole damn movie!
