Kinda on the fence about this. Remakes and/or reboots more often than not don't work. But the idea of taking a male dominant franchise and using an all-female cast is intriguing, if done right. Ghostbusters I'm keeping an open mind about. I just wish studios would stop trying to remake things. An all female crime caper movie could be really good, but why remake Ocean's 11 to do it? Just do something original. Bridesmaids did that...very similar to Hangover but not a remake of any sort. And I actually liked Bridesmaids over the latter. The other problem I have is with casting. Helena Bonham Carter I think could work really well in an Ocean's 11 type movie. Sandra Bullock and JLaw not so much. Glad Lawrence had to back out. And Bullock is a great actress, but I just don't see her as a criminal with the suaveness and sophistication that Clooney and Pitt brought. Blanchett could work in the Andy Garcia role. Kaling I guess is the comic relief? Meh.
They aren't running out of ideas they are just too lazy to come up with any new ones. Its been like this for the past 20 yrs Hollywood has rebooted countless movies franchises.
No, they like rom coms but the garbage rom coms they started pumping out drove even the dumbest chicks out of the theaters. So now I guess they are trying to get the girls in along with a "sure fire" dude bro draw. I hope it fails.
All-female cast is starting to take shape. http://hellogiggles.com/all-female-...acebook&utm_source=Social&utm_medium=Facebook L-R, Top Row to Bottom Sandra Bullock Rihanna Anne Hathaway Mindy Kaling --------------- Cate Blanchett Helena Bonham Carter YouTube star Awkwafina Bullock and Blanchett are apparently 100% on-board, others are nearing deals.
Well, the backlash has already begun: http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/%E2%80%98ocean%E2%80%99s-eight%E2%80%99-backlash-fans-slam-female-reboot-cast-announcement/ar-BBvtJUx?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp This is as bad an idea as was the (so-called) Ghostbusters reboot that looks to lose $70M.
I can only assume MSN writer Andrew Shuster dies a little inside each time he has to write an article under the moniker "Gossip Cop" and post multiple paragraphs quoting fan forums and tweets, including gems such as: 'while another joked, “Ocean’s 8 reboot w/ all female cast will b just as disastrous as Ghostbusters… unless they all get naked!”'
Because the Ghostbusters remake went so well... http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ghostbusters-heading-70m-loss-sequel-918515 'Ghostbusters' Heading for $70M-Plus Loss, Sequel Unlikely
This "all female reboot" nonsense is like sex with Kobe Bryant....you can kick and scream all you want but, it's gonna happen.
There's no starpower on that cast besides Hathaway and maybe Bullock. Pales in comparison to Clooney/Damon/Pitt/Garcia/Roberts/Mack/Cheadle from Oceans 11. Man that cast was sick. They should've gotten Lawrence and ScarJo in addition to what they got.
huh? Bullock is solidly in the top of the charts for star power across all actresses. For over 40, her, Roberts and Jolie are the tops. She's the female A-list equivalent of Clooney. Hathaway is not in her league. Blanchett is also way up there. But of course, I agree that there is no real way to match Clooney, Pitt and Damon....unless you get JLaw in there.
Let me guess: Sandra Bullock - George Clooney Rihanna - Bernie Mac Anne Hathaway - Matt Damon Mindy Kaling - Don Cheadle Cate Blanchett - Brad Pitt Helena Bonham Carter - Andy Garcia YouTube star Awkwafina - the Chinese gymnast
The problem is more with the rebooting than anything else. Because if you take the same proposed cast, create a well-crafted, written, directed and acted heist film, which in no other way resembles Ocean's 11, then that is likely to be a very successful movie. Rebooting, by its very nature, leads to the exact opposite. Poorly written (as it is creatively constrained), cast and director involved for who knows what reason, etc. And yes, of course I know Ocean's 11 is a reboot... of a 40 year old movie... plus without the constraints of trying to write a script that pays homage to the original, is modern and current... AND has to deal with a completely different gender in the cast. And all that said, still the male version, all else being the same, will likely be more commercially successful... since we're talking about the heist genre, and given the nature of which movies genres tend to be more commercially successful (cartoons, superheroes/action)
