I'm well aware they were made after X-Men. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have gotten those roles if it wasn't for X-Men. It was a joke anyway. He was awesome in The Prestige.
Saw it. Reaaally enjoyed the schitte out of it. easily 9/10 from me. Wished I had done some research on the characters before watching, so I wouldn't be taken off guard. It really didn't feel like an avengers movie, so realizing that he'll be joining the team gives jontro the exites. There are some "wut?" moments, I would like to discuss, but prolly will wait till CF's seen it too. I think I'll pretty much be giving my moneez to anything Marvel farts out now.
Well, I plan to see it on Friday but I'm not looking forward to Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. She looks completely out of place and the reasons they give for her casting are completely bullshit. All of that nonsense about the Ancient One being a concept rather than an actual Asian being is garbage. In the comics, the Ancient One is Tibetian who over time transitions to a higher plane as he seeks to become "one with all". The real reason was money pure and simple. Had they cast an Asian actor in the role of a Tibetian mystic, then they faced the possibility of their film being blacklisted in China who has serious political issues with Tibet. I can understand and accept those reasons but their casting choice could have been closer to the comic - say an Asian actor (Japanese, Korean, Thai even Chinese) with the character not being Tibetian. Instead they picked the whitest woman they could find for the role and thus, the character has no credibility to me. This is a lot like what JJ Abrams did to the Spock character in his Star Trek reboot where he totally screws up Vulcan biology with Spock's "romance" with Uhura. (Vulcans only get frisky once every 7 years during Pon Farr). I know I'm splitting hairs here but I'm sort of a traditionalist about these things.
If you don't know the story and the real reasoning behind the change it comes as an interesting twist. The expectation is for it to be an old Asian man and instead you get a small, frail looking bald white woman. I went in knowing what the ancient one was supposed to look like and I didn't have a problem with it. In fact, it actually adds some depth to the character and goes along with one of the themes of the movie IMO. If you were wanting a panel for panel port of the comic then you might be upset because IMO there's an even more significant departure from the comic that I'll say below due to spoilers if anyone is interested. Spoiler They completely change the nature of the Eye of Agamotto, making it nothing more than an infinity stone rather than basically everything from the comics.
He has a right to be offended if he likes. Speaking as a Marvel fan, their explanation of hiring Swinton is weak. With that said, they have claimed they were trying to veer away from stereotypes. Perhaps they went the wrong way about it. However, I think Swinton is a great actress and I'm guessing she does a great job in Strange. I'm looking forward to seeing her take, it would seem that Wong (who is Asian in the comics and Asian in the movie) may eventually be the bigger role in the long term -- he is already confirmed for Infinity War.
For those that have seen it: Is Rachel McAdams' role, more Natalie Portman or more Evangeline Lilly? Just hoping bae gets the screentime she deserves...
She's really Spoiler just a minor character, she has a bit of importance but almost in the way the night nurse was used in the first daredevil season on Netflix. She fills a purpose, but she might as well be a favorite chair. You use the chair when you need it and then you leave until you want to use it again. The movie is really all about Dr. Strange and introducing the audience to the mystical side of Marvel.
Watched it a second time on IMAX 3D. Well worth it. It didn't lose entertainment value at all. If someone would ask me to go see it a third time, I would. I had some stuff to criticize but I can't remember, the good far outweighs the bad. The only thing I can think of right now is after the first watching, I looked up the characters and had a wtf moment when I saw the ancient one, mordor, and kaecilius. They really took some liberties with those characters, because they made kaecilius much cooler than he looks in the comics while turning the other into avatar aang and vincent kapoor. Also it's weird to me that Chiwetel grew up in London, but his English accent seems fake. Yes, please.
my new fav marvel movie. i like how it's a quite a bit less playful than the other flicks. villain from casino royale was great... as was Spoiler the bigger villain . both credit scenes were nice, especially the first. saw it on xd in webster. will likely catch it again in 3d.
As superhero origins go, I think this one is better than Iron Man 1. Iron Man 1 is just more revolutionary with the awesome iron suit. Everything else though, Strange Doctor is better.
