I think we can safely say that if we didn't land Harden, Howard would have never been interested in Houston. That year in the draft, Royce bombed, Lamb was traded for Harden and has done nothing. Tjones is the only one playing meaningful minutes.

Without the acquisition of Harden we are probably still stuck as 9th or 10th in the West, swinging and missing in the draft.

 

The strength of Atlanta is if all else fails (Teague can't get to the rim? can't get Korver open? Carroll doesn't have space for his 3? Millsap can't get a mismatch? Horford can't get inside?) their worst possible outcome is often a Horford jumper, Horford is a very good jump shooter with a basically unblockable motion, they can move through their offense like an nfl progression and all outcomes range between good and awesome. It gives their team a unique dynamic where even if you play flawless contain defense, they'll still get a good shot out of it, you have to play an aggressive trapping style and live with the downsides.

Its called a salary cap, and you have to put all your investment in one or two players as your players that make or break you. Dwight and James makeup over 40% of the rosters salary obligations. You lose 40% of any organizational construction and the organization crumbles.

And 40% is pretty light in estimating the production value of James Harden alone yet James and Dwight.
