Koppenhaver is believed to be in the San Diego area. He has multiple previous assault convictions and has served at two different prison sentences for assault.

Here's the list of charges per TMZ:

-- 2 felony batteries, 1 for strangulation
-- 2 felony domestic violence with great bodily injury
-- felony coercion with the threat of force
-- felony assault with a deadly weapon
-- misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon​

Those first four can all come with maximum 5-10 yrs for first offense, depending upon State. For previous offenses, he's looking at much longer.

It always bothers me that there are these type of people in martial arts. Martial arts is about violence but it is also about learning to control yourself and develop mutual respect. One of the downsides of MMA in that while it has helped attract many to arts like Judo, Jujitsu and Muay Thai it has also brought in many who are just about fighting and winning with no interest or even an outright rejection of the values that also come with those arts.

 

I was just pointing out the differences and making a blanket statement. I'm not entitled to anything. Can I just show some humility for once? Jesus Christ Almighty.

It shouldn't surprise that a lot of athletes involved in combat sports like boxing/MMA and even high contact sport like Football, are caught up in domestic violence abuse or other assault charges. They were grown into a sport where being violent got you answers. They were praised and coached that the more they hit, the harder they hit, the more success will come. Its a sport where they beat on each other until one submits, or there is no more time left.

So when they get into real life situations, its not that hard to see them using violence to get their way. It worked for them for a major part of their life.

It's a shame that people trained him. I cannot imagine this guy didn't wreak of violence and mental instability to everyone in his presence. So someone (multiple people) continued to make this guy into a fighting machine despite being aware or at least suspicious that he was nuts.

This guy potentially just set the sport of MMA back five or more years.
