Almost seems to go hand in hand. Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb, Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, and Ted Williams were all pretty big dicks. I'm sure many more were, though Cobb is the only one I think I'd ever dislike more than ARod.

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN broadcaster Tim Tebow is actively pursuing a career in professional baseball and plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams later this month, according to his agents Jimmy Sexton and Nick Khan.

For almost the past year, Tebow has been training in Arizona and Los Angeles to hone his hitting and fielding skills in a sport he has not played on a full-time basis since 2005.

Tebow was an All-State baseball player in Florida that year and hit .494 as a junior, helping Nease High School reach the final four of the Florida state playoffs.

"Obviously we support Tim in his pursuit of a baseball career, as we have in all his ventures," said Sexton, Tebow's football agent, who is now working with CAA baseball agent Brodie Van Wagenen.

"Tim's athletic ability, his work ethic, his leadership and his competitiveness were evident in football and will show in baseball. Knowing Tim's passion and desire, we won't be surprised by anything he accomplishes."

Tebow -- who turns 29 on Sunday -- has notified his current employer, ESPN, of his desire to chase a baseball career, but he will continue to fulfill his broadcast obligations to the network.

Former MLB catcher Chad Moeller said in a statement, through Tebow's agent, "I am beyond impressed with Tim's athleticism and swing, and it goes without saying that he has shown a high level of discipline and strong work ethic. I see bat speed and power and real baseball talent. I truly believe Tim has the skill set and potential to achieve his goal of playing in the Major Leagues, and based on what I have seen over the past two months, it could happen relatively quickly."

A major league scouting director told ESPN's Jayson Stark on Tuesday: "Eleven years (of not playing baseball), nobody can overcome that."

All 30 MLB teams will be invited to Tebow's workout at the end of the month, an event he has been preparing for over the past year. Those who have seen Tebow hit have been surprised he picked up the sport so quickly after not playing it since high school.

"This may sound like a publicity stunt, but nothing could be further from the truth," said Wagenen, in a statement through Tebow's agent. "I have seen Tim's workouts, and people inside and outside the industry - scouts, executives, players and fans - will be impressed by his talent."

But football coaches had been aware of Tebow's baseball prowess. One of Urban Meyer's first encounters with Tebow was on the baseball field, and college coaches knew of the quarterback's interest and talents in baseball.

Now, with Tebow's football career stalled, he has decided to pursue another one of the sports he excelled at in high school.

Billy Butler hurt by Danny Valencia in altercation

CHICAGO — Billy Butler missed the past two games against the White Sox because he was injured in an altercation with teammate Danny Valencia, The Chronicle has learned.

No one in the Oakland clubhouse would discuss the matter on the record, but no one denied that it occurred, either.

“No comment,” Valencia said after the team’s 4-2 loss to the White Sox. “What happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse.”

Manager Bob Melvin would not comment on the incident, which occurred Friday night, according to sources. Melvin said Saturday only that Butler was out with nausea and vomiting, but he specifically ruled out the flu when asked if that was Butler’s ailment.

Nausea and vomiting typically are among the symptoms of concussions.

Valencia did not play in the finale in Chicago, quite possibly because of the altercation, though he also was 2-for-20 lifetime against White Sox starter Jose Quintana.

Butler and Valencia were teammates with Kansas City in 2014 as well as the second half of last year and this year in Oakland, and they are known to engage in a great deal of loud banter in the clubhouse and on the field.

Two players who witnessed the event and helped break up the fight spoke to The Chronicle on the condition of anonymity because they didn’t want to appear to be taking sides. One said that Valencia and Butler both played roles in the incident: Valencia should not have punched Butler. And Butler should not have provoked Valencia by potentially costing him an endorsement contract.

According to the players, the incident occurred before batting practice Friday when an equipment representative quizzed Valencia about a pair of off-brand spikes in Valencia’s locker. Valencia previously had been told not to wear those shoes in games.

Valencia told the representative that he only uses the non-issue spikes during pregame workouts. According to multiple sources, Butler, who has an equipment endorsement with a different company, jumped in to tell the equipment rep that Valencia was lying and regularly uses the non-standard spikes. Butler allegedly told the representative that the company should drop Valencia’s endorsement deal.

Endorsement deals are typically worth between $10,000 and $20,000, sometimes more.

After the rep departed, the players said, Valencia confronted Butler and told him, “Don’t you ever loud talk me in front of a rep. That was wrong,” and walked aggressively toward Butler. Butler turned around, took a couple steps toward Valencia, and according to both witnesses, said, “I can say whatever I want and your b— ass isn’t going to do anything about it.”

One player said that the men leaned in, bumped heads and then started pushing each other, Valencia started swinging and hit Butler in the temple. After the players broke things up, Butler told the players he was OK.

Butler, who then took part in batting practice, was not scheduled to play that night against right-hander James Shields, missed the next two games against left-handed starters with what manager Bob Melvin described as nausea and vomiting.

Butler has not responded to repeated texts from The Chronicle and Valencia declined to comment when asked about the incident after Sunday’s game in Chicago.

“Those two go at it every day, so in that way, it was pretty normal,” one player said. “If Bill had dropped it, Danny never would have done anything. But he kind of kept egging him on. I think it’s fair to say he was verbally provoked, very much so. I’m worried about what might happen to Danny now, but at the same time, you don’t want to see anyone get hurt.”

That's pretty big if he does miss the rest of the season. Not saying the Nats would be out of it, but that's a huge blow to their postseason chances of winning the pennant.

Will make it all the more sad the year they shut him down. Finally getting back (after basically just assuming they'd get there every year) and now they won't have him again.

Astros are currently dealing with a similar issue with McCullers. It is a big blow to lose a very good pitcher.
