What will it take to land him? In anticipation of trade deadline moves by the Marlins, I would expect that a few teams would ask about Dantrell and Miguel. We need help in the bully as well as on offense so I assume we will be in play as some level for significant bat upgrades, enter Miguel Cabrera. What can we offer that they will find hard to refuse? What will be a reasonable offer for Miguel's service? Pence + Hirsch + Cash?
Considering he's probably the best young hitter in baseball, you would probably have to start the offer at that PLUS major league level players.
Your right. Pence and Hirsh would not even get us Carlos Lee so no way it gets the best young hitter in the game. It would have to be more like Burke, Taveras, Hirsh, and Patton. I doubt Marlins trade him in the trading deadline. I think they will trade him in the winter.
It would take Chris Burke, Hunter Pence, Jason Hirsch, AND Troy Patton just for the Marlins to take a little notice.
I agree. That wouldn't be enough. Astros farm system ain't that great. D-Backs and Angels have much better players to offer.
Why not? Do you know how good Miguel Cabrera is? He is a future Hall of Famer who is still very young. Nobody knows how good Pence, Patton, and Hirsh will end up. Go for the sure thing. Cabrera is the 2nd best hitter in baseball behind Fat Albert IMO.
The Marlins are right in the thick of the Wild Card race and actually ahead of the Astros in the loss column right now. And they're winning and generating some interest without using much payroll. They're not going to be in any kind of a hurry to unload their young studs.
That's not the whole story. Pence, Hirsh, and Patton could all be future HOFers, or they could all be busts. That's the way it goes when you try to forecast these things. The D-Backs and Angels could have a bunch of big-name minor leaguers who never amount to squat... and meanwhile, their 18th round draft pick could become a perenial HOFer. The bottom line is that the Marlins know all about forecasting the success of prospects, thus they want MLB-ready players, or young guys who have had success in the majors. Right now, the only Astro that has played in the majors, and is relatively young, is Burke... and Hirsh is the most mlb-ready pitching prospect. Patton and Pence both have a ton of upside, but both are still raw, and nowhere close to MLB ready.
I think if you have a chance to go for a guy who has already proven himself for a handful of top prospects and a young guy who's shown flashes but really only been hot for the last few weeks in the majors, you do it if you know you can lock up Cabrera long term. There's no telling what any of the prospects that we give up are going to do, but you know you're getting a perennial All Star and franchise player in return. Not to mention that Berkman and Cabrera in the middle of any lineup would be pretty sick. Cabrera's one of the very few players I would actually give up that much to get.
You never see 4-1 trades where the 4 are all top flight prospects and/or major leaguers. I'm racking my brain & can't think of a single example, if someone else can, post it. Even 3-1 trades of the caliber of players yall are suggesting are pretty rare. Why do yall think that is?
Halama was a puss throwing lefty, not much of a prospect at all. Not filler, but nothing special. The other 2 were very comparable to the guys getting thrown around in this thread. And the Stros are going to double that price?
