Not just for The Monkees but also for creating what became MTV. Michael Nesmith, Monkees Singer-Songwriter, Dead at 78 https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/monkees-michael-nesmith-dead-1270079/
RIP Still have hazy fragments of watching Monkees reruns in my early childhood. They sang, hijinks ensues, then got chased around or something. Gonna have that catchy theme song floating around in my head for the rest of the day...
There are some musicians that have had tremendous success in a wide array of music and entertainment that seem to kind of fly under the radar. Danny Elfman is one, and Michael Nesmith is another. The Monkees was just the very beginning of his success, and really he is the only member who's time with the group didn't define him long term. This interview in particular dives into just how brilliant and innovative he was, and his conversation about an individual taking their "personal Las Vegas" that he gets into at the 7:15 mark is a great look into how he views his time with the Monkees, and is really just good life advice for anybody. Very influential and underappreciated talent. RIP
