The Heat has told center Shaquille O'Neal's representation that it is talking about trading him and he should be prepared for the possibility of a deal, according to two officials close to the situation. Phoenix has discussed sending forward Shawn Marion and point guard Marcus Banks to the Heat in return for O'Neal.

Asked for confirmation, one of O'Neal's representatives said O'Neal has been made aware that discussions with Phoenix are serious and ongoing, but that a deal was not definite.

Dallas also has been mentioned as a potential destination, though the Heat had not immediately informed O'Neal of that possibility.

O'Neal, 35, was shocked by the turn of events, an associate said. O'Neal helped lead the Heat to the 2005-06 championship, but Miami has struggled since, losing in the first round of the playoffs last season and opening this season with a league-worst 9-37 record.

After this season, Marion can opt out of the last year of his contract worth $17.1 million. If Marion opts out, trading O'Neal would give the Heat substantial salary cap space this offseason, when potential free agents include Gilbert Arenas, Baron Davis, Elton Brand, Antawn Jamison, Ron Artest and Corey Maggette.

Marion, 29, is a four-time All-Star and considered one of the NBA's most athletic small forwards. Marion, 6-7, is averaging 15.8 points and 9.9 rebounds.

Banks, 26, is averaging 5.2 points and 1.0 assists. After this season, he has three years left on his contract worth a total of $13.4 million.

O'Neal, who has been out with a hip injury, has two years left on his contract after this season. He will be paid $20 million each of the next two seasons.

On Tuesday, coach Pat Riley said O'Neal was scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his ailing left hip, which has kept him out the past six games.

''We just want to back it up and see, after two weeks, what it shows,'' Riley said.

Riley gave no indication as to when O'Neal would return to the lineup. Riley said O'Neal must strengthen his legs before returning to action, and that the center will be one of six players to miss Wednesday's game at Detroit.

Heat officials were on their way to Detroit and could not be reached for comment.

That has to be some sort of mistake. Shaq has 3 years of $20 million/year and Phoenix is trying to cut payroll? Not to mention he sucks.

Not too sure about this one. Last time I checked the Suns were fast paced offense and Shaq was Shaq.

The Suns would be a good team for Shaq to be revitalized.
Imagine Nash throwing Alley-oops to Shaq (if he could ever get healthy...)
    Steve Nash
    Raja Bell
    Grant Hill
    Amare Stoudamire
    Shaquille Oneal,

    Barbosa,Diaw off the bench.............

You do not need a fast center to have a fast team, see "Kareem"...

The best part is that Shaq and the Suns should be able to beat Kobe and the Lakers.

looks like Kerr is trying to help out his spurs. not that they really need it against the suns, but it helps.

Not sure why Phoenix would do this. Move Amare to PF, but what does that do to their uptempo offense?

    Wow!

Dont think Shaq can run up and down the court with those guys.
If this trade does go through, Kerr has just made the Suns into an old team, with a small window of opportunity to win the ring.

It's going to wild when the Suns face the Lakers in the playoffs, if Shaq becomes a Sun.

man the nba has been seeing crazy trades these past few years. after seeing the fleecing the grizzlies just went through, and this (shaq to the suns for marion is a big mistake for the suns in my opinion), the rockets need to get in on one of these somehow and finally get a decent 3rd scorer/playmaker to help out yao and tmac.

i think the Suns are desperate ...they might see their window w/ an aging Nash about to close shut in a year or so (hell be 34 this week).

Are the Suns that scared after the Pau trade to make a deal like this?

This would be an unbelievable trade for the Heat. Without Shaq's contract putting them in a strangle-hold, they may actually get back to respectability in the next few years.

The Suns have to be idiots to think they can integrate Shaq into their run and gun offense. Also taking Shaq on when he's on the downhill slope of his career is dumb too.

They can now run a half court offense too, which is key in the playoffs. Amare gets to play his natural position.

    Nash
    Bell
    Hill
    Amare
    Shaq

That is a pretty scary starting lineup. Shaq may be declining but he is still pretty much impossible to guard one on one. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the move to put them over the top.

    Weird...

But the Heat might as well do it. Next year they could be looking at the possible core groups of...

Gilbert Arenas, Dwyane Wade, Ricky Davis, top 5 pick

Baron Davis, Dwyane Wade, Ricky Davis, top 5 pick

Dwyane Wade, Ricky Davis, Ron Artest, top 5 pick

Dwyane Wade, Ricky Davis, Elton Brand, top 5 pick

Dwyane Wade, Ricky Davis, Antawn Jamison, top 5 pick

Just imagine if they could get Baron Davis in free agency and Michael Beasley in the draft. Or Elton Brand and Derrick Rose.

    Dang-er-ous!
