Atkins as our back-up point guard is a great idea. Get it done in the off-season!

I don't like the sound of that. Although, I like his midrange game, of which, Rafer has none. He needs to be training really hard in the summer on his three point shot, if he wants to get the majority of minutes for the rockets.

Also, there is nothing wrong with having four point guards fighting for PT. However, JL3 should not be a normal option off the bench on our team. He would be more suitable for a run and gun team. I say CA, then RA and a solid 10minutes for Vspan would be nice for next year. In Vspans third year, I say he should aim to be the starter or the first of the bench.

if u look at atkins stats for the last 2 months of the season hes far worse than rafer, and you want him as our backup?

just develop vspan, we are already paying him the most money a 2nd round pick has ever signed to so might as well develop and see what we can get from there.

yeah, i dont understand the atkins infatuation. decent player but really isnt anything special.

what do the rockets need in a backup pg?
a guy who can shoot well.
a guy who has some size that will not get abused on the post like rafer and luther.
someone that can create his own shots yet still play within the team.

i dont know if atkins brings any of those things

Just before the trading deadline, posters were speculating on our trading for Chucky Atkins. And someone posted at that time, "NO! Just say no to Sucky Fatkins."

I don't know why that still makes me laugh. Maybe it's just a Friday thing and I'm a little punchy from lack of sleep.

Chucky might be an option IF WE DON'T trade for Mike James or pick up Steve Francis when his contract is bought out.

We need a backup PG who is under 30 years old. If he has some potential, then he need to be under 26 so that he will develop and be good in 2 or 3 years.

I think we didn't want him over rafer alston. which still holds true. He's a scorer first then an point guard. If he comes aboard, luther loses minutes. You're right in that if we don't get a Steve Francis/Mike James, he's an OPTION. Truth to the matter his, chucky atkins is a backup, and if we're going to sign him for the lle as our only option, there wouldn't be much of an uproar. Those who didn't want him were the ones that saw it first hand (I watched him when he was in L.A)

Having said all that, I really would rather have vspan improve his game during the summer and then wait and see if he can take backup minutes at the 1 than sign a scoring, no defense pg (we have a more athletic version in luther and who has a helluva lot more potential to improve during the offseason). I really do think vspan can handle backup point duties next season. I really, really do. THis is coming from someone who hasn't minded him getting no pt for most of the season and admit that he has alot to improving to do.

I'm not an expert on Atkins' game, but from what I understand, he is considered one of the worst defenders in the league. I don't think that will float on a JVG coached team, and I doubt that his +/- type statistics are of the type that Morey will want on the team.

just say no to atkins, and mike james.

atkins plays worse than rafer and is older.

    mj is overpaid.

free vspan =p hopefully he will develop a consistent shot/limit turnovers in offseason.

if luther can develop better passing/ballhanding skills he can also take over as backup point a bit more.

Lucas, just needs to stop hogging the bloody ball and run the damn play

I had great hopes for JLIII but his recent play against Utah showed me that he just isn't good enough.

When Deke is gone we will need a backup center.

FYI-7 footers don't grow on trees

    FYI-Jake can play a little

Yetti, start naming backup centers better than Jake

I'll start with Deke and Zo

    Your up.....................

your right here, JL3 is trash. He will never be anything other than a third pg on a championship team.

    ROFL

He shot 38% from three. I guess he should be at 50%. 43% from the field, 38% from 3, and 1.38 points per shot as compared to Rafer's 37.5% from the field, 36% from 3, and 1.07 points per shot for Rafer??? Yeah, I'm sure Chucky needs to work on his 3 point shot.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Rafer's a better ballhandler. Only 1 TO every 17.88 minutes compared to Chucky's turnover prone 1 turnover every 16 minutes.

Chucky has a better assist/turnover ratio and a higher assist/minutes ratio playing with inferior talent in Memphis.

    ..........yeah, Rafer's better.

If Chucky was playing Rafer's minutes on the Rox, he'd be putting up about 17-18 ppg and 6 assists.

maybe he'd be putting up "numbers", but that doesnt mean he would be helping the team as much.

Getting him before the trade deadline could have been a great move, but signing him to a longer term contract starting next season isn't my idea of improving our PG position. We can do better.

Waiting and hoping on V-Span is out of the question. We must bring in a proven player who makes us better. If V-Span forces his way into the playing rotation, great.

I think Luther will work hard improving his handle and floor game this summer and will end with most of the backup pointguard minutes next year.

lol, I'm sure you would. Atkins and Mike James would be your dream backcourt, right?

Anyway, I'd much rather see Atkins as a backup than James. Atkins can shoot, doesn't turn the ball over and can actually have some success running a team and distributing. I'm not sure what his asking price would be tho.
