As of today, the magic number for the Rockets against Portland is 2, our magic number against GS is 1.

Baring a miracle, the chance of the Rockets falling to no. 6 is close to zero.

Now due to the Clippers lost last night, a lots had been changed also.

The Clippers now have close to zero chance to move to second (magic number is 1 for OKC), that created a situation that its almost a guarantee they will rest everyone against Portland in their last game.

Now lets look at the magic number of Portland against GS : its 2.

Portland has 3 games left : Utah, GS and LAC.

So even GS will win their game against Portland, Portland still have more than 90% of the chance of winning the other 2 games to stay ahead of GS.

And for the top 3 of the west, its almost a guaranteed done deal in the order of : SAS/OKC/LAC.

That means : The Rockets will be playing a Suprs team at home with most if not all of their starters resting.

Plus another important fact : NOP, the Rockets opponent in the coming SAT - 4th games in 5 days of the second back to back, will probably be without Davis - back issue.

So, with 4 games left, the Rockets need to win 2 to secure the 4th seed and most likely be facing Portland.

It looks we have a very good chance to win both games at home under the current situation.

It makes no sense to play any starters in Min, nor even waste time travel to there.

McHale should just pull a Pop move here, by sending all 3 of his main starters back to Houston today and just give some bull crap excuse to the league such as food poisoning or whatever and let Les pay the fine if needed.

I actually support this idea. Consider it trial by fire for our woeful bench.

The number was coming from a "much improved and advanced secret methodology/procedure".

    ;)

Just win @Min on Fri and vs NO on Sat and HCA is locked. Heck, it could be locked Friday night. Then everyone can rest after Saturday night for the final two games.

There are also some other considerations to support this idea :

    - Most likely Howard will need to come back in the regular season to play a game or two with limited mins, and these 2 games at home will be the best chance to do so. If that's the case, it makes more sense to have your starters to play along with him most of the time to get the connection back.

    - Last 2 home games will probably have some of those fan appreciation nights, that will also give a little bit more of incentives for us to win both games.

There's playing smart, managing personnel the right way - like the Spurs often do. And then there's getting cute. Getting cute has a tendency to backfire.

Another reason to clinch to 4th seed prior to the Spurs game is the likelihood that we will play San Antonio in the 2nd round. Pops might play his starters in order to work on some schemes to stop the Rockets (which the Spurs have failed to do this season), or if a Spurs victory has the chance to knock us to the 6th seed, Pops might see a chance to ensure the spurs won't play their toughest matchup this season until the final round of the playoffs. Either scenario (or both - they're not mutually exclusive) increases the odds of a tough game for the Rockets.

But if we have the 4th spot in the bag, we can rest our starters which besides the immediate benefit, also means that the Spurs won't get a final look at the lineup against which they went 0-3. That gives the Rockets a strong psychological edge should they make it to the 2nd round.

Minnesota should be a gimme and we can beat the Pelicans if the starters are focused - let's take care of business there and then rest everyone

So if the Pacers will not make the last basket by Chris freaking Copeland last night against the Bucks and eventually lost the game, Frank Vogel will be just another complete idiot and should be fired?

Pacers fans hate Vogel, but that's sort of pointless. What is legit is that he did it because the Pacer were in a tailspin, which you completely ignored. It was strategically different from what Pop has been doing the entire year. It really doesn't matter who rests in the grand scheme of things. The Rockets will have HCA in the 1st round.

If they can win tomorrow night, and bring back Dwight & maybe Bev on Saturday, I think there is a chance home court can be locked up sooner rather than later and maybe you give Harden, Parsons, Asik, Lin 3 full days off from the 13th through the 15th, and bring everyone back for a dress rehearsal on the 16th vs. the Pelles.

I think McHale & Morey would probably prefer to win Tomorrow in Minny and lock up home court either then (if Portland loses that next game with a little luck) or lock up HC Vs NOLA and rest his guys for a couple days before the dress rehearsal on the 16th vs. NOLA the second time.

Also, you can sit Harden & Parsons against Minny if you want to in Minneapolis & not send them home to Houston. They will probably get more rest just staying with the team, sleeping in their hotel rooms there, than flying separately to Houston where they are out of the sight of the coaches & training staff where they might go party or whatever.

The way we have been playing on defense, I don't feel comfortable about HCA until we get HCA.

Minn and NO will do their best as spoilers. Can't take either of them lightly and they both can be VERY good.

We simply can't continue to play no defense. Pull the starter (any of them including Harden if they don't put in the effort).

I think we have to be considered underdogs in 3 of the 4 games remaining. We need to try really hard or 1-3 will be the best that we can do and 0-4 is a distinct possibility.

Remember 2 years ago when the Rockets swept a late season road trip and had something like a 97% chance of making the playoffs?

    Hindsight is 20/20.

Resting your starters or not sometimes is a judgement call, like the one Vogel did yesterday, of course it could be backfired but if only based on the result to judge his call is brilliant or dumb is nonsense.

Just because Pop doing this more often than others doesn't make him a genius or the greatest coach of all time, you are just ignoring the fact that the Spurs are a very old team and he doesn't have much choices.

Give Pop the Rockets or the Pacers, and you will see his pattern of using the players in a young team won't be that much different than the fan hated coach Vogel or Mcfail.
