If there is a correct argument for Beverley starting, it's not "they need his defense". It's that Lawson deserves 32 minutes, Harden deserves 36 minutes, and the most important minutes for Lawson are those 12 that Harden is not on the floor, where Lawson can solve our "halfcourt offense dies without Harden" issues without slowing down the epic Brew Crew fast break squad.

12 minutes aren't much in the context of a full game, so it's much more likely that Lawson starts and just happens to be an early sub in the first so that he can be fresh when Harden takes his first break.

However, that opinion may be me projecting my personal preference for Rick Carlisle-style staggered substitutions onto a coach who's a little more shift-change-style.

In general, you don't acquire a guy who averaged 10 assists a game for him to be a sixth man, so I'm not expecting this "competition" to be a real competition.

lawson will start and if he doesn't that means he didnt put his all into it. because he is obviously good enough to start and would obviously again want to because he is playing for most likely a new contract.

We've been asking for more scoring from the bench. Now we got it. This is the #1 reason why Lawson should come off the bench.

not exactly. the common theme amongst many is a playmaker. the main issue is not scoring when a team already averages 104 pts.

Start Bev, but Lawson gets more minutes.

The split will very game-to-game depending on necessity, but average MP should be 20-28.

Beverley's energy is better when his minutes aren't extended anyways and Lawson would make an excellent offensive spark off the bench.

    Da Fuq?!

Yeah I'm a LOF who joined this board 11 years before you.

Not to mention Clarkson started over Lin.

Bev is obviously superior to Lin but Bev was the worst starting PG in the league while Lin was a mediocre backup PG.

I hope Beverley improves his defence more this season, last season he was getting blown by quite easily. Some people mistake intensity for good defence

Lawson should be the starter and Mchale knows this. You don't tell a top 10 PG who will get you 10 assist 14-15 points a game that he has to battle with bottom 10 PG who's only good defensively.

Seems you have answered your own question there.

The worse starting PG nominated by you - Bev of the Rockets last season, had never been replaced to start by anyone (when he was healthy) in the Rockets last year including Cannon, Nick Johnson, Terry, Shved and Prig.

Or course, you can always come back to say : yeah those names you mentioned above all suck donkey ass and also the Rockets wanted to tank and get the number one pick hence they started Bev and also Mc Fail is the worse coach in the league.

    Oh wait.

Won't make that much of a difference , cause Bev cannot stay healthy enough so it's just a matter of time....b4 Ty takes over....

And let's keep it real here....Bev on his best best day prob avgs 12 and 5 + on the ball d....no reasonable coach will give the starting job to a guy avg that number over a guy who can get u 20 10 and can actually create his own shot.

But it's coach speak preseason chatter...just a way to let Ty know he has to come in and earn it.....shouldn't be a problem.

P.S. would be kinda a dumb coaching move to start Bev over Ty when your best player specifically asked for a ball handler and you have said ball handler come off the bench to once again put the ball in the hands of said best player to start games....doesn't that defeat the purpose of bringing him??????
McHale, Pls just coach...Morey has delivered now it's your turn....you have all the pieces.

If Lawson doesn't play defense he won't start. There's smalls galore that can create, create their own shot, and give you 20. If Lawson doesn't play defense he could become just an expiring contact for trade purposes. McHale isn't joking about that. Lawson has to D up or he'll come off the bench.

McHale knows Lawson will start, or get most of the minutes at PG. But he's also sending a message that Ty has to have his act together, and not show up to practices drunk.

    Lawson off the bench?

What about that whole 'we need another playmaker' plea that Harden made?
When Bev is in with the 1st unit, Harden is still THE playmaker.

No, Ty was brought in to add some extra playmaking dimension to our
starting squad to give James a break.

I would be shocked to see him as a 6th man or 2nd tier PG behind Bev.

Yep. McHale is basically just setting the tone to say that he's in charge and nothing will just be handed.

    lawson will start

Where was bev's defence in the wcf ? Injured and unavailable which is a concern.

I'm a wolverine fan but even I can admit he is not a starting pg on a wc team. Maybe out east but not out west.

Bev is a good defender but his style of d is better suited for the 90s he reminds me of a young Gary Payton sans offense...in today's game he can't get away with that kind of aggressive d....Nor does he have the height or size to trully challenge a shot. Love his hustle though.

Ty is a starting point guard in this league. If Bev was doing such a great job they wouldn't trade for him Ty . Morey traded for another ballhandler to stop harden from running himself into the ground not for his d....which is not as bad as the media is making it out to be.

If McHale has any sense he should start Ty and let the wolverine do what he do.....cause havoc on The defensive end for short bursts off the bench so he can be available deep into the playoffs

Showing up drunk will earn Ty DNP's and turn him into trade bait.

Not playing defense will earn Ty a role off the bench as a backup playmaker in Pablo's role of last season.

Only playing defense will earn Ty a spot in the starting lineup alongside Harden.
