much rather bring him in than guys like Kaepernick/RGIII or Hoyer/Mallett et al But obviously wouldn't want to guarantee him $15M for multiple years or anything
Giving up on him before the new regime has a chance to look under the hood? He's only 27, hasn't missed a game in several years, has played well, and is on a team which historically sucks. It's not all on him. If he's available, even though I prefer drafting a QB in the first, you have to give the Lions a call.
I think he's a viable candidate to take a flier on since he has been a top 10 QB in the past, but I would still want to draft 2 QBs in this years draft. The goal ought to be to end up with a QB that can consistently WIN you games in the last 2 minutes.
For all of you saying "yes" -- Are you saying that factoring in his current salary of 17.6M per year? Because that's part of the equation. It's not just about whether he's better than Hoyer or not on the field.
I think his cap hit next year is $22.5M, 8th highest in the league. Are teams really going to trade for that? I was kind of assuming he'd be cut and pass through waivers because of his contract. Lions wouldn't get anything back from a trade but they'd save $11M. EDIT: OK, I looked into it. If you trade for a player, you're responsible for their salary but not any of their signing bonus. So, with out the $5.5M signing bonus, Stafford's base salary next year is $17M. Still #7 in the NFL, but a somewhat more palatable number.
No. I understand we're desperate for a decent QB but I'd rather draft our own than trade for a retread
Yes and draft Hack or Wentz and let them sit for a couple of yrs. That would take foresight something the Texans have never had.
