[ESPN] Mashburn/G Robinson swapped Another nice move for the Sixers. Sure, Mash is not going to play, but Rogers gives them another veteran shooter and Mash is set to retire after the season. Hornets get cap relief after the year. --------------------------------------------------------- http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998845 The 76ers are on the verge of their second big trade in less than 24 hours. League sources tell ESPN.com that the Sixers will send the expiring contract of Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson to the Hornets Rogersfor another inactive former All-Star – Jamal Mashburn – and Rodney Rogers. Rogers joins Chris Webber in the Sixers' retooled frontcourt in Philadelphia. Mashburn has missed the bulk of the past two seasons with knee troubles and is not expected to play again. As such, insurance will cover 80 percent of the money left on his contract: $10.1 million next season and the rest of this season's $9.3 million.
Good move for both teams. Gives the 76ers a solid bench PF behind Webber. And at C they have Dalembert and Marc Jackson. Hornets get cap relief. And they will get more when they move Baron for D. Davis.
Hmmmmm, imagine that. Looks like they are gearing up to take a run at some FA's. They probably have the best chance now of obtaining the services of one Stromile Swift. Wouldn't you agree?
76ers Trade Robinson for Rogers, Mashburn By DAN GELSTON AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia 76ers completed their second trade in two days, sending forward Glenn Robinson to the New Orleans Hornets for Jamal Mashburn and Rodney Rogers on Thursday. Both Robinson and Mashburn have yet to play for their respective teams this year. Mashburn has a knee injury and may never play again. Robinson, earning more than $12 million in the final year of his contract, is on the injured list with left ankle tendinitis though he's been unhappy since losing his starting forward spot in training camp. Rogers can become a free agent at the end of the year. His 3-point shooting fits nicely with coach Jim O'Brien's offensive philosophy, but Rogers is only averaging 9.3 points and shooting just 27.5 percent from 3-point range. Mashburn is making $9.3 million this year and $10.1 million next year, but seems likely to retire because of his knee injury. He hasn't played since last March. The Sixers dramatically reshaped their roster late Wednesday night, acquiring five-time All-Star Chris Webber from Sacramento as part of a six-player deal. Robinson averaged 16.6 points per game in his first season in Philadelphia last year - down from his career average of 20.8. He lost his starting spot at small forward to rookie first-round pick Andre Iguodala in training camp and has rarely been seen with the team since then. The new-look Sixers - who are just a half-game behind the Boston Celtics in the Atlantic Division - play at New York on Thursday night. Link
Million dollar question is whether this means Davis follows Mash out the door. And what happens to the other two big expiring deal guys, Shareef and Walker? Evan
Talking about star power. AI said he wanted to stay as a Sixer, but he said he might now sign the extention if management can't find any valuable pieces to support him. Now see what happened. Sixers has locked the Atlantic division. Other teams just have to tank their season.
