TES IV: Oblivion (PC/Xbox 360)

So Oblivion looks like it's on track to deliver even more of the role-playing action that the series is known for. That will undoubtedly please series fans, but this is also a game that should appeal to role-playing fans in general. There's a much stronger sense of narrative in Oblivion, and we found ourselves getting caught up in the story quickly. Earlier games, like Morrowind, had you wander around a bit before you found your purpose in the story. There's no such problem in Oblivion, and it looks like this epic role-playing game will deliver a solid story, along with the open-ended depth that the series is known for. The game is scheduled to ship in "spring 2006"--a Bethesda representative states that an official release date will be announced in the next few weeks.

Timeshift (PC)

There aren't many details on the multiplayer modes, except that there is multiplayer planned for the game. From what we've seen, TimeShift will be a good-looking, fast-paced shooter with time enough to spare. The game is scheduled for release later this year.

The game unfolds entirely in Mexico City, where numerous, meticulously researched and detailed environments will deliver complete immersion into the future of urban warfare.

Burnout Revenge (360)

Based on what we played, Burnout 360 looks like it's coming together just in the nick of time. The anemic postlaunch offerings for the 360 have left many hungering for something more, especially on the Live and achievement front, and Burnout 360 looks like it will be riding to the rescue. While a good chunk of the game is a redux of the current-generation Burnout Revenge experience, there's a fair amount of new content and challenge--thanks to Xbox Live and the achievement system--to warrant checking the game out. Given that none of the Burnout games released on Xbox previously are currently backward compatible on the 360, there's a good amount of support for snagging yourself a copy of Burnout Revenge for the 360 when it ships this March.

The Outfit (360)

Based on what we played, The Outfit's multiplayer is shaping up to be a strong complement to the single-player game. The visuals are flashy and crisp, and the frame rate is looking solid. The control, although rough and quirky in spots, works well enough. Finally, the offline and online offerings and the combination of available modes go well together and should provide players with a fair chunk of action to explore. We're eager to see how the final game shapes up when The Outfit ships exclusively for the Xbox 360 this March. Look for more on the game in the coming weeks.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (360)

Speaking of making a marked improvement, Modern Combat looks like it'll be a significantly more cohesive game on the Xbox 360 than it was on the lesser consoles. Rumble Roses XX (360)

Rumble Roses XX appears to have a lot of the visceral stuff that fans of these games were hoping for in terms of its cast of fighters and their fighting moves. However, the attempt to refine the gameplay has resulted in a lot more promise than we would have expected. We'll be curious to play more of the game to see just how much depth this actually lends to the whole experience. But, from what we played, RRXX is certainly shaping up to handle a lot better than its predecessor. Rumble roses XX is slated to ship later this year for the Xbox 360. Shadow Hearts: From The New World (PS2)

Set in the United States during the Great Depression, Shadow Hearts: From the New World is Nautilus' upcoming sequel to 2004's Shadow Hearts: Covenant, which was set during the First World War. In the upcoming game, you'll assume the role of a 16-year-old detective named Johnny Garland, who, like many of his role-playing game peers, suffers from amnesia and has no living relatives. We recently had an opportunity to spend some time with a near-finished version of Shadow Hearts: From the New World, and we found it to be every bit as entertaining and humorous as its predecessor.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)

To us, this disc always smelled like a Japan-only bonus, so we had to find out if American gamers would be able to enjoy Existence as well. Turns out there will be a limited edition of Subsistence that will contain all three discs, while the regular release will only ship with the main game on disc one and the multiplayer on the second disc (which is already a ton of game). So if you want the complete and total package, you'll have to make sure to get a hold of this limited edition, which may in fact be of, well, limited availability.

We were also interested to note that the American release of the game will feature full online leaderboards that you can access from within Subsistence's multiplayer interface. These boards will rank players over a long period of time and also by the week, and you can view overall rankings or simply the top players for one particular game mode, like deathmatch, sneaking, and rescue. Finally, players will be awarded animal rankings (much like in the single-player Metal Gear Solids) that gauge their performance, such as scorpion, tarantula, and fox hound (which is, of course, the highest rank).

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (PS2)

So far, the game has held onto the classic Onimusha style and feel fairly well, even after its shift in characters, full camera control and such. It's honestly been quite easy up to this point in the game, what with us having never come close to dying yet, so we're hoping the challenge picks up later in the game. Regardless of that, it's evident that Dawn of Dreams has a whole lot under the hood of its action-based gameplay. With teammate commands, upgradeable weapons and characters that touch on RPG elements and so forth, Onimusha fans should have something to look forward to next month.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)

If Kingdom Hearts II were a roller coaster, though, it would be Space Mountain -- fun for all and full of magic every time. I don't think the game was meant to be taken too seriously, neither for having a deep, skill-based battle system, nor an epic storyline. Just like a Disney movie, everyone will be able to enjoy Kingdom Hearts II.

Suikoden V (PS2)

While we played what will likely amount to a tiny fraction of the adventure in Suikoden V, we liked what we saw. The promise of the combat system has us intrigued, and we're especially curious to see what kind of fun we can have with our saved data from previous games. Naruto Clash of Ninja (GC)

Based on what we played, Naruto: Clash of Ninja is fine for what it is. The fighting system is accessible, albeit basic as far as 3D fighters go, and the modest roster includes a decent sampling of the core cast. The catch-22 to the game is that its sequel, which is set to follow for release in the US sometime in the future, offers a better overall experience. But the odds of later games being published will likely rest on how the initial game is received. If you are totally jonesing for a Naruto fix you'll want to keep an eye out for Naruto: Clash of Ninja when it ships early next month. However, the game's modest roster leaves a bit to be desired. Pursuit Force (PSP)

Based on what we've seen so far, Pursuit Force is looking like one sharp game for the PSP and arguably one of the best seen on the system to date. The game makes use of excellent, time-tested mechanics and throws in the new car-leaping feature, which is a blast to use. The improvements made to the European game are welcome changes, and they stop well short of dumbing down the experience to the point of lobotomizing it. The tweaks make for a better, well-rounded experience overall. If you're hungering for some original hotness on your PSP, you'll be hard pressed to find something currently out that tops it. Pursuit Force is slated to ship this March.

Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai (PSP)

Samurai Warriors: State of War (PSP)

In addition to the single-player story and free modes, Samurai Warriors: State of War will boast wireless multiplayer support for up to four players. We've not had an opportunity to test any of the multiplayer modes to date, but we can reveal that two of the gameplay modes will be titled vanguard and bandit. Vanguard will be a deathmatch-style contest in which the winner is the first player to defeat five enemy captains within a time limit, while bandit will task you with collecting money from fallen enemies until you accumulate 10,000 gold and are declared the winner. Intriguingly, it appears that you will actually be fighting on a different battlefield and that your chosen characters will be present on the other players' levels only as CPU-controlled enemies. Although there have been rumors to the contrary, there will be no support for cooperative play. Look out for a full review of Samurai Warriors: State of War closer to the game's release.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (PSP)

From Russia with Love (PSP)

Splinter Cell Essentials (PSP)

From what we saw of Essentials, the game seems to be maintaining the series' high graphical standards on the PSP. The game's technology is based on the PS2 Pandora Tomorrow engine, which has been pulled apart and reworked to run well on the portable platform. All the series' trademark effects are here, from the night and thermal vision modes to the dynamic lighting that facilitates many of Fisher's hiding places. As on the consoles, many lights can be shot out to give you even more hiding places. The levels and characters look to be a little less detailed in terms of geometry--which is to be expected from a PSP game--but otherwise, this is unmistakably a Splinter Cell game.

Daxter (PSP)

In short, Daxter's looking hot. We've only played a handful of levels, so we can't dole out a verdict, but everything we've seen leads us to believe Ready at Dawn has a top-notch product in its hands. Plus, it sounds lengthy too - more than 12 hours of solid gameplay for the average gamer, according to developers.

Me and My Katamari (PSP)

Based on what we saw and played, Me and My Katamari is shaping up to be a portable entry in the series that lives up to its predecessor. The game contains all the quirky charm its console cousins do, and it takes a funny spin on the typical formula. The control works out well, despite the loss of the second analog stick and the multiplayer modes, and the new enhancements should make for some nice additions to the experience. All told, we're pretty excited to get our hands on the final game when it ships this spring for the PSP. Look for more on Me and My Katamari in the coming months.

NBA Ballers: Rebound (PSP)

Wireless ad hoc support for up to two players in both the one-on-one and one-on-one-on-one modes should offer this PSP game some life on the multiplayer front, as will the loads of unlockable content that kept players coming back to the original game. While the load times got in the way of some of the fun in our hands-on time with the game, the core challenge and lively animations made up for it. NBA Ballers: Rebound is scheduled for release in late March, and you can expect to see, read, and hear more about the game in the coming weeks.

Untold Legends 2: The Warrior’s Code (PSP)

At any rate, The Warrior's Code still delivers the sort of button-hammering, dungeon-crawling action that fans of this sort of game have come to expect. SOE has fortunately added a good bit more variety to the combat with each character class's optional beast form, not to mention charge attacks, counters, and the like. Metal Gear Acid 2 (PSP)

Based on what we've seen so far, Metal Gear Acid 2 is shaping up to be a more-than-adequate sequel to the original, with improvements to every area of the game, from the refined gameplay and greater number of cards to the new multiplayer options and 3D goggles. The game's stylized aesthetic--which is more akin to a comic book than to the muted, industrial tones of the Solid series--has also been pleasing so far, though we'll have to see a lot more of the game to pass final judgment on that particular change. At any rate, the game is due out next spring, and we'll bring you more soon. For now, check out some new direct-feed movies of the game in action, and stay tuned.

Pokemon Trozei (DS)

The second single-player gameplay mode is a little more conventional, at least inasmuch as it just keeps getting harder and harder until it beats you. At the start of the game there were only a handful of different Pokemon types falling from the top screen, but as we progressed through the game, that number increased quite dramatically. There must have been around 40 to 50 different types of Pokemon in play at times, and we're sure that that number will get much bigger, given how many Pokemon actually exist in Nintendo's much-loved monster-battling universe.

Metroid Prime: Hunters (DS)

Based on our time with the demo, it looks like Metroid Prime: Hunters is finally reaching the final stages of development. Hunters looks and feels a lot like Metroid Prime, which is no small feat on a handheld. At the same time, this game offers enough new experiences to grab the attention of veteran bounty hunters. Tetris (DS)

We tried the tower game in touch mode, which essentially requires you to wipe out a massive column of haphazardly stacked blocks (which fill both screens) to get a crate full of balloons to the ground. In this mode, you are able to move pieces by placing your stylus over them and dragging them to where they need to go. You have a little bit of leeway to go left and right, if there's room. To rotate a block, you simply double-tap it. Depending on what part you tap, the block's movement can occur either clockwise or counterclockwise. Though we didn't have too long to play, the touch-screen support worked fine and complemented the time-tested, addictive gameplay. The visuals were simple and colorful, but hey, it's Tetris--it's not like the game needs photo-realism. In addition to the touch mode, the game will feature several multiplayer modes, including two- or four-player contests over the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. For ad hoc matches, up to 10 players will be able to play in a single multiplayer game using just one cart.

It's clear that 2K Sports is taking its role as the sole third-party developer of Major League Baseball games seriously, and it's preparing MLB 2K6 to be one of the more-ambitious console baseball games in recent memory. Whether the team will be able to deliver on all that ambition, through the new gameplay mechanics and intense statistical tracking, remains to be seen. I'm going to be blowing some majoin coin on 360 games this much. GRAW, Burnout, Battlfield 2, The Outfit, Oblivion and probably Far Cry and Blazing Angels... holy hell.

360 games coming into their own...looks like I may have to consider picking it up sooner rather than later.

Metroid Hunters and Tetris. Yes. Finally a real Tetris for the first time in a while. And online as well...hells yeah.

For those looking forward to Oblivion (hehe...that sounds funny), there was a media blowout last Friday/Saturday. So along with the preview I posted, there are tons more at IGN, 1UP, TXB, Gameinformer, and more. There are a few new videos as well. TXB has two new clips from the game that look amazing (IMO), and IGN has one of those clips (in lower-res) plus a developer interview. There's also a podcast from someone who played the game:

(about 1hr 15 min long or so)

The podcast kind of takes you step-by-step through the beginning of the game (when you pick a race, a birthsign, a class, etc.). A good thing to check out if you have the time.

BTW, I didn't forget about the last preview thread. I'm kind of waiting for all the last reviews to get put online so that I can do one last post to finish up the thread. IIRC, several games didn't get released until today (like "24" IIRC).

Ooooho yeah. I've been waiting for this puppy for months... I hope the hype is worth it.

On another note, D&D Online was released today. I'm debating getting that.... but with ES4 being released possibly in 3 weeks or so, I dunno... no way I can play both at the same time.
