Southern Democrats realized they needed to find a new flag carrier for their racism and so they became Republicans. True enough.

Oh please, the Republican movement to cut foodstamps and other benefits for urban poor is just code words to stop giving money to Blacks. It's disguised racism. It always has been. Half the Republican party is outright racist. There's plenty of racists amongst Dems - no doubt about that but the dems platform isn't based on confederate values.
You realize you can have black "friends" and still be racist right? Racist people don't always advertise that they are racist.
As far as switching, the only switching that happened was when the Democrats transferred their support for racism from white racism and the KKK to black racism and the NAACP/CBC. And that happened over time because the civil war generation and their immediate descendants died off and there was no longer enough people left to support the platform of white supremacy that the Democrats had championed for well over 100 years. Nevertheless, the Democratic party continued to dominate the statehouses and the congressional delegations of Southern states starting in the 1980's, but did not really start to pick up steam until the 1990's, when those states finally started switching in mass to supporting Republicans, as they very largely do today. And that happened not as the Republicans became less "liberal," but as the Democrats became radically more "liberal," in fact too "liberal" for these constituencies. So the suggestion that Democrats abandoned the Democratic party for the Republicans in the middle to late 1960's as a result of the Civil Rights Act is clearly not supported by the historical facts.
He's probably paid and coached to say these things for social relief or food for thought. That or he was extremely naive. I don't buy the story because there's another element to Roof that is unconscionable.
White Supremist groups are GOP Devotees. http://www.aol.com/article/2015/06/...1_lnk2&pLid=672816049&a_dgi=aolshare_facebook http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/06/white-supremacist-donated-to-gop-candidates.html http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/22/us/campaign-donations-linked-to-white-supremacist.html?_r=0 http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/white-...acre-suspect-donated-to-republicans-1.3122315
It took time but make no mistake, the republican party targeted the racists as a voting block. https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Southern_strategy
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." With the way that the Democrats and the left have aggressively and very divisively gone out of their way to pit "people of color" (that is non-"white" people) against "white" people, it is hard to imagine white supremacist groups supporting anyone else at this point. It does not follow that Republicans support them, lies by racists on the left notwithstanding.
Your statements beg for depth, clarity and references. "With the way that the Democrats and the left have aggressively and very divisively gone out of their way to pit "people of color" (that is non-"white" people) against "white" people". Please explain what this means and provide references? So the White Supremacists aren't the ones who are going out of their way to 'pit people of color against white people" it's the lefties? That are white and not racist? Repeat that and if it makes sense to you, you might need to speak to a doctor about brain damage.
This is Lee Atwater being interviewed while working for Ronald Reagan as a campaign consultant. He's only being this honest because the interview was supposed to be anonymous. So Mojo you can now no longer pretend that you don't know.
It's not the hundreds of years of white people subjugating "people of color" in America that's the problem, it's the Democrats pointing it out! Damn those divisive Democrats! If they didn't stir the pot we could all pretend we live in a color blind world. Kumbaya my friends, kumbaya.
Here is some added context. 52 percent of republicans are men and of those, 87 percent are white. http://www.people-press.org/2012/08/23/a-closer-look-at-the-parties-in-2012/
Yeah... but Civil Rights movement, 1960s and the Southern Strategy changed the landscape. And this happened decades ago. This is also a "historical fact." Black voters didn't wake up one day and decided that they no longer like Lincoln. There is a reason why the leader of the group that helped with Dylann Roof's "racial awakening" donates exclusively to Republican candidates: http://www.politico.com/story/2015/...-council-of-conservative-citizens-119274.html
While technically that is true, it is intellectually dishonest. The subjugation was done by racist white males who have now moved to the Republican or Tea Party. Affiliating them with a party doesn't matter. If you eliminated the parties, the injustices would still exist.
