They should bat him leadoff I'd still take the 24 year old starter with "stuff".... but it's not about Jarred vs. Jake, it'll be Jared vs. Moran+Jake+unsigned player
Honestly Marisnick was the second or third most important part of that trade. Moran was the big fish, and that comp pick should really help assure we get those top 2 picks signed. Moran is currently sporting a .308/.372/.462 line at CC, with no errors. The only way we truly regret that trade is if Cosart turns into a spectacular pitcher and all 3 of the players we got flame out. I'd say the odds are strongly in the favor of us at least breaking even.
Maybe... But I'm not really debating it. Many feel Cosart is what he is, and if that's the case it was a good trade. But games like he pitched last night show that maybe he hasn't peaked at 24.
In your opinion, who is the comparative pitcher Cosart would be that makes the trade a winner for the Marlins (assuming both Marisnick and Moran become competent everyday players)?
First of all, the latter is a big assumption. Cosart's a competent MLB pitcher now... the other two haven't panned out yet. Secondly, are you looking for a historical comparison? Or a current day one? If as Luhnow says, he expects Cosart to be a yearly 15 game winner with a sub 4 ERA, I'd take that everyday over the next 5-7 years (but we all know he doesn't really believe that... as you don't usually trade 24 year olds who you think will become that). I'm just not as convinced as many of you that this is a slam dunk trade. Will need to see what Cosart does not just this year but the next 3+ years... and will need to see if Moran's development is up to snuff (Or is he another Brett Wallace? or is he another tradeable asset for an established MLB player?).
I think Luhnow was wet over Moran and he loves having extra picks. He couldn't take Moran at #1 but still wanted him. He figures he sold high on Kike and Cosart so getting Marisnik who has the tools to be a good player was gravy. Luhnow is playing fantasy baseball, dynasty style. He figures he'll trade some known to get a grab bag and the opportunity to hit it big with one of them.
So basically, several on here debate how good Cosart will be, but feel assured that Moran will be a really good, long term, mlb 3B Uh, ok
Ok well, we will agree to disagree then. When I see that Moran is hitting well at AA so Cosart has to be a stud to make the trade Oh, never mind And for the record, while I did not like the trade I hope Moran ends up being Wade Boggs and Marisnick an all star and whoever we draft with the pick signs But dang
Dang, what? They traded a young guy at a position of depth for a couple of younger guys at positions of need, one of whom was a potential #1 overall draft pick just a year ago. Even if he doesn't pan out, you are infusing the system with stronger talent. Part of the purpose of a deep farm system is to use it in trades - not everyone in our farm has a future with the Astros, even if they are good players.
ok, we didn't use the depth of the farm system in this trade though, we used a major league starter and the "dang" was meant as a follow up to the post which started our conversation. it's just funny to me that people (not everyone) seem to consider Moran a sure thing because of a good couple of weeks at AA, but Cosart is a big question mark. That's all....we won't agree on this as i'm not on the continue to trade away any good assets for more assets bandwagon Hopefully at some point, we will see if Luhnow has the ability to build a major league roster or not. That will depend on whether or not Crane ever gives him the money to do so. If not, then at least a lot of yall will have fun with all of the one asset for three asset deals, and all of that
Apparently not everybody on the actual MLB team has a future with the Astros either, even if they are good/young players.
“If you had asked me, ‘How would you like to have Appel and Moran?’ I would have thought there’s no way to possibly pull that off,” Luhnow said. (from the above link). I agree with the sentiment posted above... Luhnow was simply dripping over the chance of landing Moran. Similar to how he has a soft spot for former Cardinals draft picks that had since been cast-offs. He's always going to have preferential treatment/bias for guys he scouted/acquired... vs. old Wade guys that he inherited.
