52” Sharp AQUOS for $1499.00 at Costco. They double the warranty for free. 120HZ 1080p with 5 HDMI inputs. Costco has great deals on Samsung and Sony, as well. If you have a local store, you can sometimes find better deals on the showroom floor and they always double the warranty. Even better deals on plasma displays, from what I've seen browsing around. There's one not far from where I live in Austin. Good luck!

plasmas nowadays don't have burn in issues. they even have some burn in screen program, in case you do have some.

depends on what you watch or if you have lots of reflection in your room.

you can get 50inch 720p plasma for cheap. $899 Samsung or Panasonic at bestbuy

But if you do choose LCD, i'd get the Sharp.
Philips TVs are now made by Funai.

 

Then I'd get the warranty doubled, unless you need to use a credit card. Costco takes cash, check, ATM card, or American Express, which can be a potential problem for some folks.

Great plasma. Plasmas do not have burn in issues they sometimes have ghost image retention (no biggie). The picture is usually more vibrant than a competing LCD in its class. And you get better viewing angles. As far as glare, haven't noticed glare problems on a Sammy Plasma in 2 years.

 

I've noticed that a 55" plasma display is often cheaper than a comparable 52" LCD. Guess the LCD's are currently "hotter" in the market. They both look great, IMO. I'm still cautious about the glare issue, though. I've got a million windows in my living room, but maybe the glare issue has been solved. I've considered a plasma for my bedroom, though, which would be a perfect spot for one in my house. One question, however. Large plasmas put out quite a bit of heat. You can feel it if you just stand in front of one. Not a problem if you keep your pad chilled, like we do, but some might consider it an issue.

 

Samsung or LG. End or story.

Check out the new "LED" Tvs. I don't know if they're out yet but maybe you can wait til they come out.

 

Being an early adopter has its risks.

 

I'd avoid the Sharp. Its possible they absolutely fixed the banding issues, but the fact that its been a persistent problem up until the last generation (start of 09) at least, doesnt do well for the once stellar reputation it once had in the LCD market.

If you're talking about their flat screen CRT tv's, did you have to get 2 friends to help you move it? I hear the military is buying some of those to use as bunker busters now. lol.

Hey, I bought a new 42" Hitachi plasma tv sometime around late 2004/early 2005 for around $3000 I think. It's 720p/1080i. Oh nooooo, it's obsolete.

 

AVOID COSTCO! Buy at Sam's! ALWAYS!

they're out, they're nice and they're overpriced.

they use less energy and produce better black level than a regular lcd (led is the backlighting), but they cost more.

the high end places are selling the Samsung LUXIA brand TVs to compete with the XBRs of Sony. if you got the money should check them out.
