Lin without a ball dominant teammate

I think this is a perception vs reality thing. The perception is that Harden dominates the ball and Lin doesn't get many touches. Many people's eye tells then that the ball gets sticky with Harden and that Lin isn't handling the ball.

If you actually look at the numbers that isn't the case at all:

So far this season Harden has possessed the ball .1186 of each minute that he's played.

Lin has possessed the ball .1254 (corrected: Thanks steady) of each minute that he's played.

Brooks has possessed the ball for .1345 of each minute that he's played.

Beverley has possessed the ball for .1104 of each minute that he's played.

Parson's has possessed the ball for .0907 of each minute that he's played.

So, not only isn't Harden dominating the ball, he's actually holding the ball less than Lin or Brooks per minute played and he is only holding the ball slightly more than Beverley.

What these numbers show is that there isn't a single player on the team that totally dominates the ball as is the case on other teams. The Rockets share that role between several players. That only makes sense since our 2 guard is leading the team in assists/min and points/minute while only being #3 in the team in time possessing the ball per minute played.

And it sounds like you're assuming the coaching staff is telling Jeremy to stop being aggressive and to stand in the corner.

    Which is more likely?

    1) A coaching staff that is paid to win games (at the cost of their jobs) is telling a player that's had flashes of great play to NOT play to his strengths, because their star players need the ball.

    2) A player that has been streaky in the past has confidence issues and sometimes becomes tentative.

Of course he is being told to stand in the corner. He is often on the weak side and corner is the only place he should be.

Good post. I agree with this aside from putting it ALL on Lin. Coaching has to play a factor. But I've said it numerous times, when Lin is being assertive and decisive the turnovers aren't getting him benched. The unforced error, bonehead turnovers coupled with timid play get him yanked every time.

    3) Coaches tell player to space the floor better so that harden can operate.

Great stats. Perception is often skewed by bias. You see what you want to see. The people that like to nitpick or bash certain players fall prey to this all the time. "Dominate the ball" is thrown around so often that I think people assume player X has two or three times the amount of touches that other players have. It just isn't true.

That being said I think regardless of who we have in the back court we need to get DH his touches. Every night. He had an awful start last night but really asserted himself as the game progressed. He can be that kind of player if given the chance. And he's another player that I'd like to see playing with that controlled aggression. Last night he was pumped.

Lin had 2 baskets and 1 assist off of the pick and roll last night so I'm not sure that that qualifies as "ridiculously good".

I think our offense is super simple
    1. Post up Dwight
    2. Run multiple PnR until someone decides to drive to the bucket
    3. Pass out of PnR roll and watch someone shoot an uncontested or contested 3 pointer

Are the players not mature enough to run something more complex. I don't compare us to the Spurs becuase they have played together for 100 years, but I do enjoy the back cuts for easy points. Which we have zero.

I also don't understand why we're horrible at throwing D12 wide open lob passes.

That falls under scenario 1. Coaches directing a player to play away from his primary strengths. Does it happen? Yes, there are designed plays where EVERYONE spaces the floor to let Harden penetrate and create. But the comments I'm addressing are from the posters that are saying coaching is dictating Lin's every move on the court and is forcing him to play tentative. I do not believe that.

If your opinion is that Lin is being specifically directed to give up the ball, not attack and stand outside for spot up shooting for his entire time on the court... Well, you're entitled to that opinion.

Those were pretty much the only P&Rs we run for him...What we've seen yesterday is still not Pg-centric offense, Lin just played more minutes and was able to get into the rhythm, that's all really.

The real issue is the lack of PNR actions.

Also Harden's PNR usually leads to him scoring or going to the line more often than not. He's so phisically strong often times he doesn't really "use" those picks. But it can be stopped by contender teams if we rely on it the whole game.

Lin's PNR involves the team more, so ideally it should be the starting point of our offense(to initiate the offense) if we want championship instead of playoff run. Otherwise, against good teams we are going to be stagnant and struggle.

It's like DSLR camera is better than phone camera, but you have to know how to use it. I know a lot of people would just use the phone camera's(cheaper and easier). No I'm not referring to Lin vs Bev;)

Hey, the number for Lin should be .1254 (I think you pulled his assist number from your chart instead of his possession time).

To give some perspective, most PGs have possession of the ball 1/5 to 1/6 of their PT, and usually it is closer to 1/5. Some like Chris Paul, John Wall and Kemba Walker have it even more. Lin has possession only about 1/8 of his PT.

And do we not space the floor when Lin has the ball? Of course we do, we do it for everyone.

In his time on the court Lin has the ball more than Harden so is the coaching staff hindering Harden's game by making him space the floor for Lin? Of course not, because that's what you do. We share the playmaking duties.

Yeah, you are correct. I had it right in the chart but wrong in the text. Still the same point though, Lin possesses the ball more per minute played than Harden does.

Understood about other teams PGs time of possession but those teams don't have a shooting guard who is a better assist man and a much better scorer.

Those weren't the only pick and rolls but regardless that's irrelevant. It's silly to declare a guy as "ridiculously good" at PnR based off of 2 scores and 1 assist in 44 minutes. Especially when the final basket wasn't even really a pick and roll (though I counted it as one). Howard just kept going and never did even stop and set a screen.

Don't forget tho, Lin takes the ball over to half court, which is something Harden doesn't do very often

Do you consider time spent bringing the ball up the court something that could skew the possession timing? I'm wondering if the Rockets pace and the fact that there are 4 ball handlers who bring the ball up the court at any given time that its probably not that big of an issue, but just wonder if that's something you have thought of.

Lin without a ball dominant teammate would suggest Lin would be 1st or 2nd option on offense.

Sorry but no thanks. Any team with Lin as 1st or 2nd option would be a lottery team.

Thank God we got Howard, Harden and Parsons

It would be nice if they had a stat to track time of possession in the front court.

In OKC Harden came in and actually ran the point whether Westbrook and Durant were in the game or not. Brooks trusted him to make the right decisions. Therefore it is not the same case with Lin.
