Former National Basketball Association all-star and River Hills resident Latrell Sprewell is being investigated for battery and possible sexual assault, according to sources at the Milwaukee Police Department. MPD spokesperson Anne E. Schwartz confirmed that Sprewell voluntarily appeared at Downtown police headquarters this morning with his attorneys, Steve Kohn and Jonathon Smith. According to a police source, a 21-year-old female alleged that she and Sprewell were having consensual sex Tuesday aboard his yacht, "Milwaukee's Best," when Sprewell began to strangle her. Police allegedly observed red marks on the woman's neck. Police are investigating the allegation and searched Sprewell's yacht for evidence, but it is uncertain at this point whether charges will be filed. A Milwaukee defense attorney contacted by OnMilwaukee.com said that if the sexual contact was consensual up until the choking incident, Sprewell could be charged with battery. If there were threats made, however, he could face a charge of second-degree aggravated sexual assault. "If the act was consensual, this could be a tough case (for police)," the defense attorney said. Milwaukee police recently investigated a similar case involving Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Brian Shackelford. Shackelford was arrested on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault when a woman he met on Match.com claimed that he assaulted her after some consensual contact. The Milwaukee District Attorney's Office decided not to press charges in the matter. Sprewell, 36, attended Washington High School in Milwaukee, starred in college at Alabama and went on to be a marquee player in the NBA. Despite his success on the court, he is perhaps best known for his choking incident of then Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo during practice in 1997. According to news accounts of the incident, Carlesimo criticized and then approached Sprewell, who threatened to kill him and then dragged him to the ground and choked him until teammates intervened. Sprewell was suspended 10 days without pay for the incident and the Warriors, facing intense pressure from fans and media, voided his contract. Sprewell ended up sitting out the rest of that season and didn't return to the NBA until January, 1999, when the Warriors traded him to the New York Knicks. Sprewell became a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden, and went on to play two seasons for Minnesota. He sat out last season because he refused to sign with a team for the minimum salary. There was talk that he'd sign with Dallas or San Antonio before the playoffs, but nothing materialized. You can see the boat at http://onmilwaukee.com/scoops/articles/spreeinvestigated.html
http://www.click2houston.com/sports/9766198/detail.html Woman: Former NBA Star Choked Her Latrell Sprewell To Meet With District Attorney Thursday POSTED: 8:25 pm CDT August 30, 2006 UPDATED: 8:34 pm CDT August 30, 2006 E-mail this story | Print this story MILWAUKEE -- Former NBA star and Milwaukee native Latrell Sprewell is under investigation, accused of sexual assault. Sprewell has been ordered to meet with a Milwaukee County district attorney Thursday afternoon, WISN-TV reported. He has not been arrested, but after the meeting the district attorney will decide whether sexual assault charges are warranted. Sprewell went voluntarily to the Milwaukee Police Department headquarters Wednesday morning aware that a 21-year-old Milwaukee woman he had been with Tuesday was accusing him of sexual assault. Police said she told them the two were on Sprewell's yacht Tuesday at McKinley Marina, having consensual sex, when Sprewell began choking her. She wasn't seriously injured, but WISN-TV sources said she showed police red marks on her throat and claimed they were the result of the incident. "Milwaukee police searched Sprewell's boat this (Wednesday) morning, looking for evidence. They said they had his permission, but they wouldn't say what, if anything, they found," WISN's Nick Bohr reported. Sprewell also allowed police to take possible evidence from his body. Earlier this month, Sprewell's 68-foot yacht was in the news when it ran aground while he was onboard near Atwater Beach and had to be towed out by a tugboat. Sprewell starred for Milwaukee Washington High School in the late 1980s and went on to national stardom in the 1990s, but it was a sometimes bumpy road. The low point was an incident in 1997 when Sprewell was suspended for nearly an entire season for punching and choking his head coach P.J. Carlissimo. He later apologized before he was re-admitted to the league. "It's definitely not something I condone, but it did happen. It's a mistake that I made," Sprewell said in 1997. Sprewell wasn't there when WISN went to his River Hills home to get his side of the story, and his attorneys were not talking.
wait, so he had consensual sex, and then choked her...right...what brings someone to do something like that? wtf? but no thanks, we don't need another overpaid player that's over the hill. SAY NO. and bad news he was a former knick so who knows what might happen...
I think he deserves it. I thought he loved his family, saying not enough money to feed family and kids and now see what he has done. He bought a freaking cruise and had sex on it. Thats no way to feed a family!
the guy is an enigma. I think we've seen the end of him in this league. no way he's gonna be able to feed the family now - especially after you factor in the legal costs.
i dont like his attitude, but it sounds to me like she could be making this up, i mean he got what he wanted, why would he choke her? sounds like shes using the pj thing to get money. but you never know. i do think he was on the boat though
I see now that his whole thing with PJ was widely misconstrued. He wasn't trying to kill his coach, he was trying to heighten PJ's sexual pleasure thru asphyxiation.
