Don't think Phil wants to coach. If he did, he'd already be the coach.

Somebody has to be at the bottom. Why someone else, and not the Knicks?

How would folks here feel about Woody replacing Sampson this Summer?

Keep in mind that Sampson's main roll was watching a ton of tape on all 30 teams, devising a game-plan for their players & sets, and running them through defensive game-play in practice.

I think there is some merit to hiring an old firey coach for the defensive position as a person that can be a little more stern with the players, and keeping more of the players coach personalities in the offensive decision making roles, but I think this role just needs someone that pays attention to detail and works really, really hard and long hours to make sure the team covers all their angles in defensive prep.

JB, Finch, and McHale can help communicating this, and enforcing it among the players in practice and in games. I'd look for a smart up and coming workaholic like a young JVG, or Spolstra. I dont trust Woody or a been there done that former head coach to put in the time and commitment to be the guy they need.

I doubt Phil wants to coach the Knicks, his legacy is based on him picking the teams he's willing to coach very carefully, he's not going to ruin that by agreeing to coach a lousy team because he knows he'd have 0 chance of doing anything with less than a great team....he's just not that kind of coach.
