http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...n-seek-additional-compensation-boston-celtics After Cleveland's physical examination of Isaiah Thomas' injured hip raised concern about the timeline for his return this season, Cavaliers officials are planning to seek an additional trade asset before finalizing a deal to send four-time All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics, league sources said. Without revisions to the original trade agreement, the Cavaliers could threaten to veto the trade, league sources said. The Cavaliers' stance could trigger a standoff between Cleveland and Boston officials, forcing both organizations to weigh the consequences of letting the blockbuster trade implode. The deadline to report and submit to a physical for the players involved in the trade is 10 a.m. on Wednesday, and the deadline to pass the physical is 10 a.m. on Thursday, per league rules. However, if both teams mutually agree to extend the deadline, they can. Once the sides re-engage, Cavaliers officials may try to make the case that Boston undersold them on the scope of the Thomas injury, and more specifically, how soon Thomas could be prepared to play this season, league sources said. The sides did discuss and share information on Thomas's injury, sources said. Because Thomas is in the final year of his contract -- which coincides with LeBron James' opt-out next summer -- Cleveland has an urgency to get Thomas on the court this year. All along, Boston has believed it was clear in its assessment of Thomas' physical status and that information was communicated to the Cavaliers in the conversations prior to Tuesday's trade, league sources said. In a telephone conference call with reporters after the trade was announced, Celtics GM Danny Ainge admitted that Thomas' physical condition played "some" role in trading Thomas to Cleveland as part of the Irving package. Cleveland had significantly valued the 2018 Brooklyn Nets pick in the trade, and Boston believed it allowed for Thomas' physical uncertainty in the current terms of the deal, league sources said. Thomas, 28, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2018, and could still reestablish his market value with a strong performance and a return to his quick, explosive self. Cleveland had coveted 2017 No. 3 overall draft pick Jayson Tatum, but Boston had been unwilling to include him into trade talks for Irving, league sources said. Besides its own future first-round picks, Boston has possible access to future protected picks from the Los Angeles Lakers (2018), Los Angeles Clippers (2019) and Memphis Grizzlies (2019). Boston does have control several second-round draft picks too, which could also be included into a deal. Irving was scheduled to take his physical with the Celtics on Saturday in Boston, league sources said. Irving had requested a trade from Cleveland earlier in the summer, and the possibility of finding another significant deal package without Boston's assets as leverage in the negotiations could be a sizable task for the Cavaliers. Thomas has been rehabilitating a hip injury that ended his season in the Eastern Conference Finals, and sources have told ESPN that he has yet to begin a regimen of running this offseason. If the deal falls apart, Boston would have to count on using its arsenal of draft picks, Crowder and other assets to bring them another point guard in a future trade - if Thomas isn't the long-term answer. Still, it is unlikely that the Celtics could find a point guard of Thomas' stature on the market - never mind Irving's. How Thomas and Crowder's psyches would be impacted upon a vetoed trade returning them to Boston is factor in this process too. Cleveland could be facing a bigger challenge bringing Irving, 25, back into the contentious Cavaliers situation. He asked for a trade and has wanted no part of a return to the Cavaliers. Cleveland would need to quickly re-engage potential teams around the league on trade scenarios again. Cleveland could ultimately help itself in the short-term by moving Irving to one of the several Western Conference teams that it had discussed deals. This way, the Cavaliers wouldn't be fortifying the biggest threat to their Eastern Conference supremacy, Boston, in the final year before James could leave in free agency. Still, Boston had offered Cleveland the deal it most wanted --- which included a draft pick that is likely better than any other available to the Cavaliers on the market.
This is the #dish, not the #garm. If you were going to make it #rockets related, at least include the two players in the thread title.
You made a pointless, waste of time, never in a million years trade proposal on an NBA Dish thread about Kyrie and IT... That didn't involve either player... Stay in yo lane, son.
I have a hard time seeing that happen - but aside from Terry Rozier being added in the deal(he doesn't really move the needle), I can't see too many other ways they can compensate without draft picks. Maybe throwing a future 2nd would be more likely but if it's a future 1st then IT must be out most of the next season.
Wtf did anyone come close to isaiah thomas (still an all star who is arguably a better fit next to lebron), a Great top 3 pick, jae crowder (jack of all trades, solid wing defender) and a solid young prospect? And now cleveland wants more? Wtf, if i am ainge i give the finger to the cavs and tell them to cancel the trade if thats what they want. With the way they were so open about the hip injury after the trade and I am certain it was disclosed during the trade process. Now the Cavs just want to fleece the Celtics after it's all said and done?
an all star that will be out for almost all season and is expiring, a pick that will be around 10 in a top heavy draft , a role player whose best quality is that he's cheap and his defence has been taking a turn for the worst, and a young center who has no clue what defence is and has horrible stamina.
If Isaiah ends up damaged goods for the Cavs then they would have essentially traded Kyrie Irving (the second best player on a championship team) for Jae Crowder, one top 7 pick in 2018, and a prospect that probably won't amount to being an All-Star. The Bulls got so much better of a return for Jimmy Butler. I'm sure even Phoenix can offer better with Eric Bledsoe, their 2018 1st, and salary filler.
This brings me back to the voided D-Mo trade. We ended up having to waive Marcus Thornton (who was originally apart of the deal) because he lost out on what would have been a better opportunity in Detroit getting meaningful minutes on what was a winning team. Is Crowder going to want to go back to Boston knowing he'll play backup to Gordon Hayward? If Crowder cares about how he'll be perceived when he hits free agency then it's in his best interest to find a team that'll give him more minutes and responsibilities. The voided D-Mo trade obviously killed the value of Motiejunas as a RFA. Thomas might not be able to cash in this coming summer as a free agent if there are concerns about his hip, so he might feel some type of way to Danny Ainge. If the Cleveland-Boston trade is canceled and Isaiah becomes apart of the Celtic locker room again, then he might have negative effect on their young core reminding them that loyalty comes second in the NBA. If Ainge didn't show loyalty to Isaiah after he gave his body and heart to the team, then there's no reason for any other Celtic to show loyalty to him. All of a sudden there's a rift between the locker room and management.
It a hip injury being blown out of proportion The nets are a bottom 5 team period A role player who is cheap, can 3 and d, and slash. He is trevor ariza in his prime. Forget the prospect. Because thats what he is and a trade chip. Kyrie is still trash at defense.
Jae Crowder had the best +/- of anyone in that deal. Both IT and Kyrie play such bad D their O doesn't really make up for it.
