"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" — Isaac Asimov If a person has a Nobel Prize in a particular field of science, I'm more inclined to trust their judgment than a person who doesn't in that field. I'm sure you're trying to get a dig at Obama's Nobel Prize which I agree is complete BS, but that wasn't a scientific Nobel. We're talking science here, if you didn't notice.
Evolution is merely a theory about the shift in biology from generation to generation. It was never intended to explain how all the energy needed to boot this thing up came to be. The attempt for the explanation of the "Singularity" paradox falls squarely in physics. To bring up the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics to "attack" evolution is ridiculous, and it demonstrates a disregard for basic differences in the schools of science.
While I agree that religion has a lot to do with the woeful/willful ignorance of societies, it's unfair to single out Islam here. I hope you realize that. You're doing yourself a disservice to your argument by doing so.
Did you read the article? The reasoning behind those two assertions is mind numbingly stupid and lacks even a basic understanding of evolutionary biology and physics. If people want to argue against stuff, they should probably do enough homework to understand what they're arguing against first.
Would it make you feel better if he had mentioned every religion? That can get kind of time consuming, you know.
"Some of the republicans are embracing the ignorance, much like religious folks think their holy book has any real scientific value." I'd prefer that. He generalizes in the next sentence, so I'm sure he didn't mean to make it seem like he was singling out Islam. I got the point nonetheless; just arguing semantics at this point, which I admit is fruitless... so I'll STFU.
Man, I can't WAIT for the New Inquisitions! hmm... I mean, New Crusades! er, uhm... I got it! The new Plague! yay!
Ah, well than {sic}, as long as we've got a Voucher! Right, Mrs. Nussbaum? Nice blog. That is truly perfect. I'm sure that's the sort of stuff that was going through Perry's mind. No wonder the rest of the logical sane world is so wrong, what with these little gems of undisputed perfection hiding in the interwebs from us all. If only we all were so edumuhcated so that we too could mix and mingle science that is "beyond our understanding" to make it fight against itself when we don't like it. Fight Fire with Fire!
Why is it that your reference on this scientific matter is not a science website, but a right-wing political blog?
Krugman didn't get his Nobel Prize in Economics for being snide about Republicans, he got it for being one of the most cited economists in the world, and devising his part of New Trade Theory by showcasing the fact that economists of a generation ago had forgotten about returns to scale. Argue against him all you want, but if you're going to take a dig at the Nobel, and somehow posit that the highest mark of intellectual achievement doesn't celebrate intelligence---forget it.
One might say, why do you bother posting? Your statement was absurd. That's the kindest thing I can say about it. Sure, you are welcome to disagree with Krugman for his political views, but that has nothing to do with Krugman getting a Nobel Prize and his intelligence. Back before you were born, I ardently disagreed with another Nobel winner about his politics, Henry Kissinger, but I would never have said that he wasn't intelligent, or make a rediculous statement similar to "...because you think having a degree or Nobel prize makes someone intelligent. It most certainly doesn't." Honestly, and once again, with all due respect, you are making yourself look foolish. That doesn't require my "help" at all.
If you desire scientific references then read the article. It quotes numerous 'credited' scientists. I never said having a Nobel Prize makes you unintelligent, I said having a Nobel Prize doesn't make you intelligent. Krugman's problem is that he is incredibly dishonest.
Because of the parallels in leadership ignoring real science to pander to the mythological beliefs. It is a dangerous slope to try to force science to fit around some arcane made up hocus pocus like religion. DD
Actually I am not, I am simply being topical and tying in the slippery slope that Islam has gone through to the beginings of the ignorance of science going on here. Ignorance is ignorance. DD
