It's all a cost-benefit study here for the Knicks.

    1) Waive him before the season starts- it will cost us (NY fan) $54 million over 5 years in accordance with stretch provision. Say $11 mil per. So a savings in 2017 and in 2018 of around 14 mil. But in 2019-2021, we get nailed for 11 Mil of dead space. So this is a con. The pro is that w/o him, and without taking back any talent, replacing him w Beasley in the lineup, we have a great shot at earning a top 5 lottery pick, and this is the year that you want a top 5, with the chance to draft Donkic,Bagley,Porter,Bamba or Dayton.

    2) Trade him - Unless Houston could ship Anderson to a team that could absorb salary, there is really no scenario where this is beneficial to the Knicks. The goal is to be awful this year and to try to front load salary this year to free up money in 2 or 3 years. Keeping Carmelo helps more than hurts in this regard.

    3) Keep him - Probably the most economically beneficial scenario, but with the natural progressive improvement of Porzingis and Hernangomez, and if Melo stays on the court, the team has a chance to be mediocre to average. This is the worst scenario for the Knicks.

Bottom line is that the Knicks have to suck this year. That top 5 draft pick is key in 2018, and that is why, I think eventually, we will cut and stretch Carmelo in order to chase that top 5 pick.

So i still dont see a massive issue with New York holding onto Ryno for 3 years. If they run with Zingas, Hernangomez and Frank then the only person they need to pay massive will be Zingas in that time right? Then if they get another low pick next year. Boom. Theres a core of young guys who you wont need to pay for a couple more years.

Betting on a star hasnt helped New York for the past few years. Its got them sniffing around early play offs which shouldnt be their goal.

Play the Minnesota/6ers game and be competing against them in 5 years. Not against Lebron and the Warriors now.

Ryno is a great player and is a great prototype for these players to learn from.

Then again maybe its just wishful thinking.. and me wanting Melo now.
