There are no roster spots. All the current players have guaranteed contracts. Rockets would have to buy out a player and be responsible for luxury tax on the waived player and Brewer.
Yes, they did. They would be paying double for Brewer on top of the luxury tax for JJ's bought out salary for the remainder of the season. They also need to convince him to playoff for a lottery team over a playoff contender. A chance to play with Kevin Martin and Scola or a chance to play with a future Hall of Fame PF, Duncan to help him on a final run for an NBA ring. Duncan is on the last year of his contract. Brewer has a once in a lifetime chance to play with future of Hall of Famer, before Duncan retires. It's unlikely he gives that all up for Scola. Who could blame him? All the other waived players are doing the same thing. Murphy and Bibby want to join the Miami 3. Jeffries wants to join the Carmelo and Anthony, NY duo. Brewer could be in the picture in 2 months.
When did Corey Brewer become a good player? Last I remember seeing this guy was when he was playing for Minnesota, struggling to get playing time. I'm not sure he was ever an option on offense or a defensive stopper (maybe you guys are thinking of Ronnie Brewer) but the guy only brings his height and athleticism.
With Carmelo and Amar'e in the lineup, where is the space for a bad shooter in love with volume shooting? http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images...-dribble/24shotpercentage-dribble-blog480.jpg
Even if they can't find a spot for him, let him rot on the IL. When your team is going to the playoffs and hoping to pull some upsets with your newly-acquired franchise-player, why would you give your strongest opponents another guy for their rotation? Lotto teams waiving players makes somse sense even if I don't like it; it makes no sense for playoff teams.
I'm stunned they're cutting Brewer, given their depth. D'Antoni needs to be better at making things work with the guys he has.
I'm stunned that people are stunned about this. Best I can figure is that one of the previous posters is right and they're confusing him with Ronnie Brewer, who has had some decent seasons. Between Fields, Anthony, Bill Walker, Roger Mason (who doesn't play) and Jared Jeffries, where do Corey Brewer's minutes come from? The only players he's even arguably better than on that list are Walker, Jeffries and Mason, and one of them doesn't even play, and Walker can at least shoot 3's. Jeffries can guard 4's in a team that has only 3 players over 6-9. Brewer can't do either of those things.
WojYahooNBA: Nearly a dozen teams have checked in with free agent Corey Brewer's camp and they're sorting through the suitors now. I'm well aware the Knicks need help with interior D, so bringing in JJ is just fine. Not sure why they felt the need to release Brewer. On the outside without looking at the roster, I would think there is someone else they could have waived. I don't get it.
