his contract size will also help facilitate a trade for a much higher paid player. lets say we want to upgrade our PF spot. you start with trading TJ... but then i'd prefer not to trade: dwight james lawson ariza brew beverley dmo capela that leaves a combo of TJ, KJ, dekker, harrell, thornton, terry. it would probably look bad to trade vets like terry and thornton after signing them to 1 year deals. we don't want free agents to avoid signing here in the future. however a package of the remaining players harrell/TJ/KJ/dekker = about $8M in outgoing salary. that means we could have up to $12M in incoming salary (if harrell doesn't send us into the hard cap). $12M for a PF could get us horford (what a dream that would be!), favors, faried, thad young, amir johnson, etc... without KJ's contract we would either have to sacrifice one of our rotation players in a trade, or settle for a package of harrell/TJ/dekker/thornton for an outgoing salary of $6M, which could bring in only a $9M incoming salary (again, if harrell's contract doesn't activate the hard cap). for comparison's sake, a $9M PF wouldn't be worth that package: taj gibson, baynes, frye, garnett, ryan anderson, illyasova, markeif morris.
I'm excited to see KJ in action for us. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5w8wAtjgxT0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> He'll be coming off the bench, hopefully he can continue to play like he did in Philly.
I think KJ has one year to prove himself to Morey. If he doesn't show good enough potential to be a good rotation player long term, he'll be moved next year before the trade deadline. His third year team option will be enticing as a trade asset.
Even without considering the rising cap, isn't $3mil a year like what mid/late 1st rounders get paid? He was picked 32nd and proved in his rookie at least that he can be a legit wing defender in this league. Doesn't that more than justify the ~10 spots above his drafted place? Y'all are spoiled by the ridiculous bargains Morey gets haha.
A $3m deal for a guy who should be on a rookie contract who's already shown promise deserves its own thread? lol The MLE is going to be more than double his salary next season. He already has every skill Brewer has ever had, and he's 6 years younger. I'd be amazed if Brewer is still on this team next season. IMO that was the questionable move, even though I got so much love for Brewer.
@bima why do we think this is an acending contract compared to pats and Corey's which are structured as declining. Wouldn't players rather be payed more at the start anyway? Seems bizzare to me
We think it's ascending because it IS ascending. It's not a guess. Declining contracts are rare, actually. The Rockets just so happen to have negotiated THREE such deals recently (Ariza, Brewer, Beverley). Agents aren't dumb. They know that declining deals usually involve less overall money (in exchange for the slightly higher starting salary) and that they will likely become well below market on the back end. That's why they're rare.
As other posters have said, since when did 3M equate to a big contract? He's getting paid the same amount we paid Royce White..ie first round money. I don't really get the point of this thread, how much production are you expecting out of 3M PER?
Bit of a double standard to question "faith" by the player, then in the same breath you display your faith for the player when you ponder whether he could be easily moved if he fails team expectations. It's a different age for fandom. Anyways, he's unproven for sure, but his market value is a better indicator of whether he deserved the money. By any indication, he could've received more from a different team, and the signing is considered a risky, yet good reward bargain from outside media. Don't doubt Murry's calculations. He could be a Dorsey. Risks don't always pan out.
Huh? I was saying he must repay the team's faith. Because I clearly have indicated I don't think he fits our team and what we do. I'm probably wrong of course. It's moreso the fact we put him ahead of other possible signings where those players could come even cheaper and be possibly a better fit. There's no doubting that on the open market he is a relatively cheap option, but he rode the pine for us (yes, I know he was dealing with an injury, but realistically he was not going to get meaningful mins regardless) and we are theoretically better/deeper than we were last season. He's going to have go bananas in practice and limited opportunites to become valuable for us.
