I think you're right on Rick Smith's role. I listened to about 30 minutes of the podcast, it was good but did they talk about the Texans at some point?
The past draft does increase faith in Smith. Better than nothing since he's not going anywhere. The only real mistake past draft was trading up, for a scrub. It's acceptable to miss picks every year, but we can't be multiplying them for scrubs... Nix. Smith shouldn't get all blame either, as it appears all coaches' opinions are considered when drafting... Wade is credited with Watt, and BoB, Nix. Right now, the main thing is BoB's QB evaluation.
I think Rick is due for some blame. Let go Brooks, Jones, Boyue, and switched them with Jeff Allen, XSF, and Kevin Johnson. I mean, are Gm's really supposed to f teams up that bad?
I never blamed Rick for anything. This stellar defense was formed during his time here. Don't try to fix what's not broken.
Hate to tell you....EVERY TEAM has misses in the draft....EVERY year. There is no team in the NFL where every draft pick makes the team.
If you remember O'B didn't like Brooks and Jones, because that yr the Texans never could get any push up the middle.
Smith just cut Strong while we are already short at receiver. My only guess is that they feel comfortable with the TE's and Bruce Ellington coming back.
Post was from 2016. Watson might be okay. Didn't like spending an extra 1st though. If he succeeds quickly, it won't matter.
Every team makes some mistakes therefore a team that always makes mistakes in the mid rounds is no big deal.
The bottom line is, whoever was more responsible for the Osweiler signing has to go. At the time of the signing, The media seemed to give all the credit/accolades to Smith... and he didn't defer any of it.
