I imagine he was stealing due to some ethos. Probably just wanted to screw over the system in some harmless but narcissistic way. "Come on officer! How can I get from downtown back to campus without my bike!?"
He is at university and you have upward mobility posts? He is eligible for all kinds of financial support.
When I was in high school, the kids who would swipe chips and stuff at the lunch lines were kids who while not rich could certainly afford to spend money on chips or a soda. They were just jerks who didn't respect ideas of authority, property, etc. To them it wasn't "I need to steal the chips, or grab someone's food because I can't afford it myself" it was "I'm going to steal the chips, or grab someone's food because I can and F them." Most people who steal things are not just struggling to survive.
Why would anyone steal food these days? The government is practically BEGGING people to get on food stamps
Didn't know you went to Florida State. And why has ESPN not broken this story yet? Will he play this weekend?
First he was arguing the thief's small amount of upward mobility was being reduced. I argued that seems unbelievable. In that context, I don't understand his comment at all.
I was so hungry once in class I seriously thought about eating my eraser. That does suck for dude though. If it's his first offense doing anything he will be fine. Deferred adjudication will save him.
There is almost always free food available somewhere on a college campus. Can't tell you how many times I went to meetings to get free pizza.
I lived off potatoes and ramen in college, because loans and working part time only covered tuition and rent (never asked for money from parents because they didn't have any at that time). Not excusing what he did, but damn... there were times when having a KFC meal would've meant more to me than sex. I remember always being broke because there was always something that needed money; flat tire, b-day party, traffic ticket... etc
Never post bail for someone unless you know they are trustworthy. If they don't go to court then the bail bonding company will start harassing you for their money.
I think the point is that you have to consider where the person is stealing the food to accurately judge their intent, like if this was an amusement park or something instead.
Get a job, get more PLUS loans or just don't have a car and stay on campus the whole time. Two and three worked fine for me and some other combo works for most of the people there. There used to be a convenience store across from Melcher, even with their exorbitant prices I could still get a loaf of bread and a pack of ham for less than $10 that went for a few days. In any case you don't want to set a precedent of publicly tolerating shop-lifting on a campus with 5,000; 10,000 or god forbid 30,000 teenagers.
