I think if DM tries to clear space for KD next year he intends to use DMo in similar fashion to what he tried to do with parsons as a RFA. Sign KD with DMO's cap hold being much smaller and then matching whatever he gets on the market. So keeping a RFA on the books is important to keep a roster together while still clearing cap space to make a run at KD.

Kings can't offer too much more than we potentially would, right? And it evens out after state tax.

I feel like if he leaves it's because one of us (he or we) wants to walk away.

of course. but not TWO rfa that are potential getting a max. AND play the same position. btw he could agree with dmo anyway and then just fill him after durant at july 10 at the league office.
taht's why I don't expect dmo or jones to get extended this year.

Agreed....and also I don't think they keep both dmo and jones by the deadline. Jones is the likely one to get moved either now or by the deadline.

I'd take any one of Scola , Stat , Boozer or Bass on a vet min deal and let Smith walk .... Roll with DMo , Jones , Harrell & one of the above to start the season .... and work on a pg upgrade between the mid December 90 day mark & the trade deadline.

I thin you are right .... but I think the end result would be matching rather than allowing him to walk because good big men come at a much higher premium. That is assuming DMo returns to form from the back injury and remains healthy otherwise.

Havent gone through this entire thread yet, but what about state income tax that would benefit Houston vs Sac?

Kings can't offer 7 mm anymore, right? Koufus ate a lot of their cap room. What they have available is not too much more than our non-bird tender, so if he takes the state tax into consideration, it's can't be more favorable than our offer.

I'm no bimathug so I could be way off

For those that are talking about a S&T to send Smoove to the Kings, remember that the MLE can't be used to facilitate a S&T. So he'd only be able to get $2.49M by going that route. That certainly won't happen, because he won't leave us for that amount and that won't be enough $ for us to acquire Collison. If they are looking to make extra cap room to sign Josh, one alternative could be trading Papa for Collison.

saw this from a former Nets exec, which implies the Kings currently don't have much room for JS, or any other quality 4.

Perhaps that's where the stall is with Smith, Morey, & Sac: Morey may want Collison, but also wants to retain Smith and could possibly be trying to persuade Sac to take TJ (who wouldn't free up as much cap room) instead of a Pap, keeping Houston's offer of $2.5 MM competitive. Essentially - can Morey somehow get both Smith & Collison, and if not who would he value more?

Smith is a major domino that will need to fall before there's any movement elsewhere with Morey.

If Smith wanted to be a Rocket he would be one by now.
    He knows the financial situation.

    He wants more money
So don't get your hopes up

Morey is all about gambling, letting players find their market and then deciding whether or not to match. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what's going on here.

And in this case the number of teams that can make a better offer than we will and that would want Smith are drying up.
